One step closer to trying out some SASS / cowboy action shooting this sumner

I picked up this Beautiful Uberti 1873 .357/.38 all slicked up and ready for some cowboy action shooting hopefully this summer. I have the double barrel already for the shotgun course. All that I need now is a set of single action revolvers and a holster rig to set em in.

Love an 1873 - very nice Uberti you have there.

There are 2 main choices in your revolvers....Ruger Vaguero's and 1873 Colt clones or originals if you are so lucky.

Barrel length...5 1/2 is one of the most popular due to it's balance in either style.

If possible try to live fire each and see what YOUR hand prefers.

Have shot SASS for over 20 years and see many entry level shooters make decisions that don't always work.

Most SASS shooters will bend over backwards in offering you their gear to try first then buy.

Many times the existing shooters know of someone selling gear....firearms, clothing etc. sometimes there are tables of stuff offered for sale after the match.....go ask the shooters for their opinion and you will get an earfull!!

PS. Try .38 spl's in your rifle with a round nose or roundnose flat point bullet. Some Uberti's are finicky and will only feed the .357 casing using the same type of RN of RNFP bullet with a moderate to wimpy load.
Lastly, log onto the SASS Wire and read the boards that will answer much of what you may be wondering about.

Welcome to the world of Cowboy Action Shooting. It's not only the shooting, it's the dressing up and the friendships you make. I'm a Life Member of SASS and have been a member since 1990. Due to health issues, I don't compete anymore, but I still go to some of the major events to renew old acquaintances and to make new friends.

There is an actual culture and way of life that permeates Cowboy Action Shooting, sometimes referred to as the "cowboy way." I sometimes describe the major matches as being able to step into a 1940s Roy Rogers movie for a weekend. But the best example I know of regarding the "cowboy way" is a story that a vendor told me. This particular vendor told me that he wasn't set up to take credit cards, and sometimes a cowboy shooter wants to buy something but doesn't have enough cash on him. This vendor said that in those cases he has told the cowboy shooter take the item home and send a check from home, and that he NEVER got stiffed by a cowboy shooter.

So get your gear and costume together and get ready to have some fun.

Thanks, I'm leaning towards a pair of Vaqueros in .357. Not 100% sure on the barrel length yet. I've been checking out the SASS wire on and off for months now and watching some excellent YouTube videos of current SASS shooters.
There is a local club that isn't too far off from me that has monthly SASS shoots that I'll be checking out starting this spring. Should be fun . I can hardly wait!

When at the shoot, start looking at leather set ups, ask who made their set up and why they like it.....you can spend a lot of money on holsters or be a bit moderate as well. Just don't go for really cheap.

Two very popular setups are both holsters with butt of the revolvers facing back ( strong side on both sides) and many will use a strong side for dominant hand and a cross draw for weak hand.

I have used strong side for both for some time as well as both revolvers in a double crossdraw and using the cavalry twist draw.....not the fastest but still fun!

PS. You want the mouth of the holster to stay open to receive the revolver after being fired. If it collapses it is not sturdy enough.
