I know the guvment pulled these decades ago when the drug trade got highly profitable. I had three of these in 1969, but none since. How about you?

Hmmm. can't move this to Lounge here.

I recently was looking for one as a 70th BD gift for my wife. I went to a local coin show and saw a couple for sale, but they all wanted around $ 1600- $ 1800 according to grading. I didn't figure I'd have to pay that much premium.

Maybe next year she will get a $ 500, ---or maybe a $ 20

rusty is correct.
If you don't have any now be prepared to pony up
if you want to obtain one now. Both bring huge premiums
at shows. Depending on condition, "like everything else"
you will pay thru the nose to get a nicer example of either.

I didn't catch that and it's a star note too. Must be a specimen.

Years ago Binions in Vegas had 100 of these bills in a horseshoe display, a cool million in cash. It's gone now but the replaced it with a pile of 100s. A big pile.

Back about 10 years ago a jeweler friend displayed his $1000 bill. He was 70 years old and though quite wealthy, he had never owned one. His bill was in very good but not crisp condition. He said that he paid $1800 for his and was just overjoyed to get it. I thought about the 99% pre-27 S&W I could buy for that amount of money. Whatever it takes to make you happy, I guess.

In the early sixties, I got a part time job at a savings and loan. I had a little over four thousand dollars at a different S & L, from an insurance settlement. I decided to move the money to my new employer, and drew out my funds in cash, including four one thousand dollar bills. No one batted an eye, coming or going.

I remember way back in the late 40s- 50s that my father got payment in $500 and on occasion a $1,000 bills every now and then.

Dad was a undertaker in a heavily Italian area of Albany. At that time people were were real clannish. Italian undertakers buried Italians, Irish undertakers buried Irish ETC, most everybody then went with their own as they were friends and neighbors.

Many times a couple days after the services were over the family would come to our house. Anisette and/or wine some pastries would appear on our table some small talk would occur. The head of the family would pay the bill in cash. Out of a old envelopes the necessary money would be produced and by the musty and sometimes moth ball smell you know this money was taken out of some secret hiding spot in the attic or normally basement. I remember seeing those bills a few times over my early years.

Things were so much simpler then!

Never had the scratch for currency collecting, though I love seeing the oldies and oddities.

My dad had a small stash of 'significant' currency he'd saved that came to me when he passed on. Nothing of high face value, but some of high 'cool' factor.

Some of the more interesting ones:
Red-seal $2 bills
A few 'silver certificates'
Some Hawaii-stamped currency from his time there in WWII
A roll of about 20 1963 "Kennedy conspiracy" K-series dollar bills. Luckily I knew of the legend behind these, or they would have just looked like garden-variety $1 bills. No great collector value, but interesting because of the legend.

He and I both ran more to coins than bills for collecting, and he was into stamps as well. Got a few of his favorites in the safe-deposit along with mine.
