Only legal in 2/3'rds of America

And just how many of the 48 contiguous states does the OP have a realistic expectation of ever visiting? Maybe instead of whining about the few states which might ever be an issue to him he should concentrate on getting non-resident licenses from the states that will get him the states he really may need.
Exactly. And it should be the same for driver's licenses too. Why should one state recognize another state's driver's licenses? I firmly believe you should be required to get a driver's license for every state you plan to drive in.

INFO

Maybe I missed it, but is there a site(free) that tells you what states you can carry? Going to Fl from Mo soon. Thanks

Yes. Go to Gary Slider and Steve Aikens site, handgunlaw.us

A valuable feature of this site is links to the official sites in each state. I always copy the official information and carry it with me when visiting (or transiting) unfamiliar states.

I am legal to carry in 40 states with two state permits. That is all the states you can get now on reciprocal or recognition. After that, you have to go one state at a time and most of them are NOT going to sell you a carry license: MA, CT, RI, NY, NJ, MD, DC, IL, HI, CA, OR.

It's fairly easy to obtain a Florida and Utah CC license. Four hours of training, fingerprints and fees, but no range requirements. Illinois covers contingent states, these two cover most of the rest. You're good from Illinois to Seattle or Miami without unstrapping. Avoid the rest.

My opinion !!

Agree .. but until all states have the same qualifying requirements for a CCL it will remain this way ..

Illinois has probably the toughest requirements for a CCL ..You must under go 16 total hours of training that includes firing 30 rounds at a target, 10 rounds each at 5, 7, and 10 yards ..

I think the biggest hindrance in a nation wide CCL is so many states have the legal age for one at 18 years of age .. and there is little or no train in the law or gun safety in other states ..

Until those 2 items are addressed by all states we don't have any hope of a National CCL !!

Therein lies the big problem. Getting all states to agree on a single standard will result in the strictest standard being applied to all, and very likely a set of standards that very few (if any) can meet.

Even if all states agreed to certain standards there would be constant creep in the standards. Minimum age 18 would become 21, then 25, etc. Minimum classroom training of 16 hours would become 24 hours, then 40, then 6 months, etc. Minimum range qualifications of 70% would become 80%, then 90%, then 100% (it's all in the interest of public safety after all, so we must provide maximum protection for the public).

My position remains that the right to keep and bear arms is guaranteed by our Constitution, and that the exercise of one's rights requires no permission. So long as there are bureaucratic hurdles to negotiate, permission slips required, or fees assessed there is no such thing as the right to keep and bear arms, only a privilege to do so by those deemed acceptable by appointed or elected officials.
