Model # 5431, Ruger LCRx 38 Special +P 5 shot capacity
Barrel Length: 3" with adjustable rear sight, light weight.

My daughter and I would like to know more about this Revolver
from the members huge knowledge base here.

Inspected said Revolver at a Local Gun Store. Price at LGS is
decent $419 plus tax = $446 (dam tax).

Studied the Ruger website and read the speciation's, but would like
to hear what members think.

Revolver will use reloaded ammo. Used for hiking, plinking, and
four/two legged self defense.

Thank you in advance for your replies.

The lcr is a great revolver. But if not getting the 357 model and sticking to 38 special it is my personal opinion the 642/442 no lock is a better revolver. For shooting 357 the lcr has no equal in the snub department.

442 vs LCR. Here's my take:

Part 1: https://thedesertsedge.wordpress.co...lcr-comparison-part-1-specs-and-speedloaders/

Part2: https://thedesertsedge.wordpress.co...nd-ruger-klcr-comparison-part-2-range-report/

There are more articles on the lcr on my blog. Just click the lcr tag. It has over 6100 rounds through it now.

Wife has a LCR snub that we've shot a bunch. Great CC revolver. I would imagine the 3" model would be perfect for hiking, plinking and self defense. Your just not going to hide it in your pocket.
I load 158gr. SWC's with WST for soft shooting practice loads. With these the wife can shoot a fair amount and tolerate the recoil. Keep in mind this revolver weighs what a small can of Pringles does. For carry it's loaded with 158gr. gold dots at standard pressure.
Don't think you'd be disappointed with it.

The LCRx is my daily carry for the last year or so, very happy with it. Perfect knock around gun with an excellent trigger, and no problem if you want to use +p ammo....Make sure you get in plenty of range time with it, as you should with any gun used for CC.

They're supposed to be good guns. I have had cash in hand 3 different times to buy an LCR. One was the LCRx. Each time they had major defects.
One with a terrible trigger. it felt like sand paper dragging over cement. Another had a ejector star that wouldn't reset properly. Every time you popped the ejector you had to manually push it back into place. The other one had a cylinder that would hit the frame when opening the cylinder.
I still want an LCRx but will only buy it after thoroughly inspecting it. I'm sure Ruger would fix any of these problems but the QC should be better from the factory.

I've fired two different Ruger LCRx handguns and own an LCR .38 Special. The LCRx is an excellent light weight revolver. The trigger is quite good and I liked the adjustable sights on the handguns. The large rubber grip absorbs recoil to the point where quite brisk loads can be fired with little or no discomfort.

Hope that helps.

I have the LCR in 357. It is a little heavier with the steel subframe vs alloy in the 38. I still prefer 38 most of the time but do like the option of 357 in the mountains. I wish they would make the 357 in 3" with adjustable sights, but the snub works at defense distances, not a target gun.

Thank you all for the replies. Keep them coming.

Reddog81 - Upon my inspection, I too noticed that
when the extractor was pushed opened, let it back
down into the cylinder, the extractor did not sit correctly.

When I actuated the extractor the first time and slowly
began to close the cylinder into the frame it would not
close.

Upon inspection I seen this, and manually put
the extractor back in place. Then, I could swing the
cylinder closed into the frame.

I have a lot of knowledge about Revolvers and that's
all I shoot, so I'm always cautious of this, even though
none of my S&W's have never done the above mentioned.

I did check with Smoking Gun Range & Training
Center (the best Shooting Range ever) and they
did not have the a LCRx 38spl 3"bbl adj sights to rent.

I have learned my lesson about "buy on line", never
again. To much computer fraud and shilling in the
auctions.

Nothing wrong with buying online. Stick to a reputable vendor and ship to a FFL you know and trust and you will have less issues than buying from a random FFL that way overcharges you on a revolver.

In respect to the lcr, I would purchase the 357 mag version even if she only ever plans on carrying 38 special. Resale is much better and a higher demand if she decides she hates it later and wants something else

Ruger LCRx

Maybe the Circa 2016 S&W Model 60 Stainless
Steel 357 Magnum Internal Lock Hand Ejector model
5 shot 3"barrel w/adjustable rear sight Revolver
for $700, the LGS has, would be a wiser choice and
better value.

She just liked the price point of the Ruger, not realizing
the long term value of S&W.

The model 60 is also a great gun. I have a 60-7 I bought used for $400. The new ones also look nice but the prices are definitely kind of steep.

I'm not sure either one will hold their value better in the long run. They are both quality guns. In 20 years from now the Ruger will probably be worth about half of what the model 60 is worth, but the S&W costs almost twice as much today...

Unless weight is super critical, I'd lean toward the Sp101 with a steel frame. To be fair, I'm projecting my own bias/ priority into this, but going for the 3" bbl and better sights implies more of a 'shooter' so why opt for the flyweight and instead get something more enjoyable to actually use?
Still, if you want .38sp and lightweight in a kit gun, the lcrx makes the most sense. There's plenty of strong .38sp ammo options.
