Orthopedic surgery, things going right for now!

60 hours our from Basel skin cancer removal. A .50" circular portion of the left side of my nose has been removed. A larger "donor" portion of my left sternum/shoulder now has a large open wound.

3 days out from OP, I'm getting drainage from nose and am becoming concerned. No blood, but puss. Should I call doc, should I gut it out?

After four shoulder/bicep surgeries I've learn it works best for me to sleep in a recliner for the first week or so and the ice machine works great if you freeze plastic bottled water and use them instead of ice so you don't keep having to dump water as the ice melts. Keep a second set of bottles in the freezer and just swap them out as the first set thaws.

WAIT TIL EASTER SUNDAY AND NOW YOU'RE ASKING US?

If you are concerned about (and rightly so) a medical condition, doesn't it make sense to ask a medical person your question? So many people waste so much vital time asking everyone BUT their doctors medical questions. Sorry to jump on you about this, but I have much experience with this and it is a pet peeve. Take your temp & report that to the doc as well. GOOD LUCK.

Any infection post-op means GET TO THE DOCTOR NOW! You really don't have 24 hours to wait. These things can go south very quickly and lead to sepsis, which is life-threatening and potentially fatal. If the infection is not brought under control quickly at the least you will be looking at re-hospitalization for 5 - 10 days of IV antibiotics, if you are lucky. I say this as an experienced medical social worker with stints at NIH, Hopkins, and Yale.

One month today since the surgery. Saw the surgeon on day 19, was relieved of the sling. Started in with physical therapy, seeing the therapist once per week and doing a dozen different exercises every day at home. Feeling pretty good! Able to do just about anything I want to do, but still favoring the shoulder to avoid stressing it unnecessarily. Can't imagine a better result!

Nowadays if you talk about having pain meds you're not taking/don't need it's amazing just how many folks "Sure could use a couple, six, how many do you have?".

Don't leave them in the medicine cabinet because the folks that you invited over might not survive the temptation.

I hope all ya'll heal up fast and right. JD

Had a knee replaced 3 years ago , put on a machine the day of the operation to move the knee.3hree weeks out walking with a walker ,progressed to a cane for 1 week and threw that away It took about 6 months to get back to normal with walking the dog every day after losing the cane .
2years ago had torn rotater cuff ,detached bicep operated on ,cold pact on from the day of operation and padded sling for 4 weeks ,had to sleep sitting in a chair for that time . Started therapy for 3 months 3 times a week and every day at home ,hurt like hell doing the P.T kept at it using the arm trying to get back to normal, little by little movement came back .It took 1 year to be able to normally raise the arm over head without pain or help. The shoulder was much harder to overcome ,don't get discouraged some times you need to take a break but you must do the P.T.to recover.
GOOD LUCK
