Went to the gun show in Winston-Salem today. Guy there had a like new 1975 N-prefix, blue, 8&3/8 in inch barrel Model 57(no dash) in a presentation case(i.e. nothing special) for $1295.

Also had a 17-8, the anodized blue 10 shot that appeared to be used for $895. Had a used 617 4" 10 shot with IL for $795, think.

I was hoping that just the ARs had gone up.

Guess I need to increase my insurance.

Those sound like the slightly higher gunshow prices I see at shows, too. A well used model 10 for 450? A model 15 with significant blue loss on one side (not the displayed side of course) for 650? Smith prices have gone up for sure, but not like people trying to sell a run of the mill dpms ar for 2 grand!

Wow, a local shop has a perfect 57 8 3/8" for $895, no box or papers. The price you mentioned makes this seem like a screaming deal!

I can kinda' understand the prices going up a little on the military
stuff and handguns with hi-cap mags. But these dealers asking way
too much money on their revolvers and such really kind of makes
you wonder. They can keep them in the case if they ask crazy money.
Guess this panic buying frenzy has hit all dealers the same.

It will calm down buy spring, I hope. I'm having trouble finding 45acp and 9mm ammo at good prices. I would like to purchase another handgun, but I will not pay more than a fair price for one.

Funny, Some dealers think that people will pay the higher prices for all guns and not just AR-15's and hi cap semi auto pistols which is generally not the case.

On the Sig forum a guy traded an AR-15 for 5 high dollar Sig pistols but that was a private deal and not a dealer. Some guys will be be out there selling revolvers to fund a AR-15 before any changes occur.

I took a little extra time to cruise some of the local shops and at one, found a lone battle scarred 29-3 8 3/8" with a $700 price tag. It "almost" made me feel confident enough to drive across town and pay the same for a used 629 classic at another shop!

Funny, I was thinking about trading one of my AR15s for a S&W revolver or two... Anyone interested...:D

Gun prices have been creeping up the past few years but I think they got a big bump. I looked on Gunbroker for a 4506 and they are usually fairly reasonable but people are asking 8-900 for them now. Hopefully prices will come back down. I'm sure AR15 and other semi auto rifles will stay high for awhile but hopefully prices will go back down or I'm out of the gun market. I refuse to pay stupid prices for guns.

Wow, I'm in the reverse direction. I let go two Mini-14's I've had for awhile last week, brought in $1800 (from a dealer!) and just today bought a beautiful 1930's vintage 1905 Target for $800. Finally living right I guess.
I've been re-assesing my gun collection and am in the process of culling alot of modern semi-auto's I acquired over the years. I rarely shoot them so I think I'll take the profit while it's there and concentrate on the more rare guns I've always wanted. Anyone have a Browning Model 53 they're wanting to do some trading on?
The present situation reminds me of a large box of cats that has been vigourously shaken and the lid knocked off, things are running in all different directions.

Yeah, some guy has the gun I want.......a Smith Wesson .22 magnum pd351 for sale. Used with a few blemishes. He wants $1000. He won't be getting $1000 from me. It's crazy........

I bought my new 351PD from a lgs for $666 OTD ($629 + 6% s/t) Saturday. They had another one still in the case. Of course, I get home and unbox my 351PD to find a string tag on the trigger guard - for $599! Yeah, they all keep bumping the prices up. Still - at $629, it's better than most sites old price. They are a bit scarce.

Now the bad news - mine is awaiting a return FEDEX label. The extractor star skips two chambers, as I found out yesterday at the range. Still - a hoot to shoot - and with Hornady Critical Defense 45gr FTX .22 WMR, I can put 14/14 in a 1ft x 2ft cardboard target at 25yd from a standing handheld position - 12 DA (Stiff!) 2 SA (Decent!). Loaded, it still weighs nothing... not much good when it's empty - I could throw a banana further than I can throw it (Conjecture... not tested!).

A quote from U.S. Attorney Eric Holder (Heller bill): "there shall be a rebuttable presumption that a firearm procured for use by the United States military or any law enforcement agency is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, and shall not be determined to be particularly suitable for sporting purposes solely because the firearm is suitable for use in a sporting event."

In other words, ANY firearm ever obtained by the military or law enforcement is not suitable for the public, in Attorney General Holder's opinion.

Let's see, didn't either or both the military and law enforcement once use revolvers? Model 1911s? Bolt action rifles? Face it, every firearm you now own or ever will can be endangered and accordingly, will see escalated prices. So you have to make a decision - will prices deflate later or will you be wishing you had bought them when you could?

My opinion is that buying any high cap pistol (best names) would be a good investment now, if prices are at least reasonable. I got a new M&P 9mm from a dealer for less than list last week. The exorbitant prices some are asking for certain weapons and accessories (clips, for example), any other quality pieces make me uneasy. I agree that some of this will settle down. But who really knows what to expect?
Best,
Roger

Very good question!

Most dealers are just profit-grabbing right now...they have a captive audience buying a product, and are using the fear of a ban to run up prices on anything that might be bought.

I was at a recent show, and at 10am, the price on a particular BM started around 18 bills. In an hour, it had gone up to high 2's, and by the time I left after lunch, it was listing for just under 4 large. For a freakin' Bushmaster, are you kidding me?!?!?! There must have been runners at the show, because as one AR sold, the price jumped above it throughout the show.

I couldn't find a Ruger SR22P (one of my gauges to determine if a dealer is over-pricing his products) for under 4 small. I even listened to one "dealer" try to talk up his obscenely high price on revolvers on the grounds that "all guns are being banned" by Obama. Based on what this dealer was asking, she would have been better off buying retail at Academy or Cabelas, and I had no problem telling her that in front of the sheister.

Shameful, if you ask me....its going to take years to get any "ban" legislation passed - if it gets passed at all (it took 5+ years to get the '94 ban in place), but all the conspiracy minded Chicken Littles are out there are driving prices up for no good reason other than hearing themselves talk.

I am off my soap-box now and am now returning you to your regularly scheduled day. :)

I was at my local Wallmart this morning. They were just restocking ammo. All reasonably priced. They had a crazy amount of all calibers. .223, 9mm, .45 .308 you name it. I bought some .308, .45 and 38 +p, about 600 rounds for 380 including tax. Not horrible. I was on my motorcycle ant that is all that I could handle in my backpack. I called my buddy and he got there 30 minutes later and all the 3000 rounds of .223 were gone. One guy scooped it all up.

Unless you're lucky, most prices at gun shows are higher than local shops or online. Accessories can be had at shows for normal prices, but a pristine older gun will always be high as they wait for a sucker to come and think it's a great deal.
