Hello all,

I am new to the east coast, and to northern VA, and am looking for a range outdoor range where there's some room and time to tune my pistols. The local indoor ranges are good, but busy, and I'd like to take my time to adjust sights, maybe breakdown the weapon and change out return springs, and try a few types of ammo.

On the west coast there were country ranges, where I'd be the only one there and I could take my time.

My back yard. Lol. But i think ameluaygame preserve has a public range that is free if your near tge Richmond area.

Sorry Amelia game preserve. Public land and has a range fir pistol, rifle, and shotgun. I believe a skeet range as well. You might have to reserve that though. The others are come as you please. Before I bought land, I used to go there to shoit. Cheaper thsn paying for a range.

In Northern Virginia there is Clark Brothers Guns in Opal/Warrenton, on Rt-29 near the intersection of Rt-17. Rifle, handgun, shotgun, archery.

You have to buy your ammo/components there, but range time is free. Ammo is a little high, but with free range time, it's pretty much evens out. Crowded on weekends, but then what isn't in NVA? Look for the bear on the roof. This time of year it's wearing a Santa suit.

Sort of an old timey gun shop. Crowded, sort of dusty looking. Stuff stacked everywhere. The best stuff is on the wall with "not for sale" tags on them. Sort of like going to a museum.

There is also an Issac Walton range off Rt-3 in Spotsylvania, between the Chancelorsville and Wilderness battlefield. I've never used it, but did visit once and it looked really nice. IW ranges usually are. Now that I think about it, there is an IW park up near Manassas also. IW ranges are members and guests only however.

I grew up and spent 49 years in and just outside of Northern Virginia before I relocated to Texas. You are pretty much SOL when it comes to outdoor ranges in that area. You can try Clark Brothers, does get crowded. I lived on a farm or at least in the country for most of that time and could shoot on my own property. Contact the NRA, headquarters is in Fairfax you know, and see if they can help you find a place to shoot.

If you want come up the road to Baltimore, every street is a shooting range.

I can recommend two good ones in NVA. First, Elite Shooting Sports in Manassas and Sharp Shooters Range in Lorton. Of the two Elite is newer and nicer but both will serve your stated needs. Both have web sites for more info, good luck.

Depends on how far you want to drive. The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests have public ranges in SW Va. and southern Shenandoah Valley area. I believe the DGIF (Game and Fisheries) have a couple of "sight in" ranges. You can find on their websites They tend to be out in the forest a good ways.

The news the OP doesn't want to hear :

You're not going to find the experience you are seeking.

A private club will be comparitively closer in experience, at least mid day during the week. But be prepared for combination of : sticker shock, long waiting lists for membership, long drives.

If you want nearby, and reasonable $ , those indoor ranges are your new normal.

By the way...welcome to the forum. Isn't the NRA range in Northern VA? If not, I'll bet they could give you a list of places to shoot. You ought to belong anyway!!

Best Regards, Les

Yes, the NRA Range is in Fairfax, Va. And it is a fine range within the context of indoor ranges. And yes NRA membership is a good thing.

But the OP was looking for somthing different. Outdoor. Uncrowded, to point of often having range to oneself. Laid back time parameters, suitable for extensive gun tinkering between strings. And very low cost or free. I get it. Natural lighting, unlimited ventilation, no bounce back of muzzle blast, all good things. Just doesn't exist in his area , presuming he means the highly populated areas commonly known in the region as NoVa . if he is using a different context, and he means northen Shen Valley, or half way to Charlottesville, then that would be a different discussion.

If you don't mind driving to Frederick, MD (maybe an hour from NoVA, depending on where exactly you are and when you go), the Cresap Rifle Club is outdoors, has a bunch of pistol lanes (10 and 25 yds) and is $8 unlimited time. Only open to the public on Sundays and it can be crowded, but maybe not so much in Winter- haven't been there in a few years. Just pay attention to Maryland gun laws when driving in the state.

IIRC, it's closed in the winter, open something like Apr-Oct.
