Not an expert but it depends on how good your eyes are. I have old eyes but wear multi-focus contacts and can see fine with them.
I have a 3-9x40. 100 yds would be my max with that scope. In retrospect I should have bought the 4-12x40.

3-9x40 is plenty big, particularly for paper. a 6" bull at 300 yards through a 9x scope will appear to be the same size to your eye as a 6" bull at 34 yards with iron sights or a non-magnified dot. If you can't nail the x-ring with iron sights a or a non-magnified dot at 34 yards, you need more practice.

I have no problems shooting at 100 yards open sights. I just want to see out to 300 yards and see what I'm shooting at. I didn't know about t34 yard comparison. I will take a look at that.

If this gun is strictly for those ranges, I can't see a reason not to go with the 4-12. The beginning power is damn near the same, but at the end you have an extra bump if you really wanna be precise. I put a Vortex Diamondback 4-12 on my (new) series Mini and like it very much. On the flip side, I went with the P223 3x32 for another carbine for just a "slight" bump in vision, so I can use the same gun for shorter as well as longer distances.

I have a TRS 25 red dot and a Burris 332 for my M&P 15 TS. I want something more accurate on it. I like shooting with the Sights that came with the gun also.

3-9 or 4-12??????

I have the 3-9 and now use a 4-12 P-223 scope. 3-9 BDC 600 works great I just find these days my 50+ year old eyes will take all the extra magnification they can get.
That's where what Ken said makes great sense.
I must say though, if 300 is your max, the 3-9 will get you there no problem.
Check out the P-Series 2 Piece mounts too.

Here's a P-223 4-12 with Rapid Action Turret

Thanks bman I'm 59 so I just ordered the 4-12x40 P223. As far as the mount how good is the Burris AR-PEPR quick release mount??
