I recently bought a SIG P226 DAK in 40 S&W. Haven't yet put a thousand rounds thru it but I'm pleased with the purchase. I now have an opportunity to buy a P229 police turn-in, also in 40 S&W. Would this simply be a duplication or is there enough difference between the two to make it worthwhile. I also own three other 40 S&W's, M&P40, M&P40c, and CZ75b.
I don't use any of the semi's for carry, just punching holes in paper.
Would appreciate your thoughts on the matter. Thank you.

I think if you are just punching holes in paper then the P226 will be all the gun you really need. The P229 is more compact and lends itself to carry although a bit more weight in the plasic fantastic era of ccw.

Id say if its a good price on the 229 pick it up and play with it. If you like it great. If you don't you wont loose much when selling it.

Probably depends on what trigger is in the p229, if it is the sa/da then you should find it more enjoyable than the dak. But if it is a dao or dak with the ny trigger spring then run for the hills. (12#).

I personally like the olderr p228 over the p229 as it is a touch slimmer, but it is only in 9mm.

One nice thing on the p226 and p229 is how easy you can swap calibers. 40 to 357 sig with just a barrel swap, 9mm with an exchange kit which has the mag, slide, and barrel. Even 22lr swaps.

If you want to try another sig, the single action p226 x5 models are awesome. Or a single stack p220 is a great gun.

226 vs 229

I have the 225, 226, 228, and 229 (as well as 239). I tend to prefer the earlier, non-rail versions. All are 9mm - I sold my 40S&W 229 some time back. I simply prefer 9mm. 40 is great, just a bit too snappy for my old wrists. My 226 is an Enhanced Elite, and ties with my S&W Pro-Series 1911 9mm for being my most accurate 9mm. Of my two current 229's, one is a newer R-1, the other an older non-rail. I haven't had the opportunity to shoot both of the 229's against each other yet. What SIG considers to be suitable for a CCW may vary from what you're used to. I'd carry the 225 or 228 as EDC before the others - but that's just me. I prefer my 3913/3914 over the 239 to carry, but do like the 239's controls better than the 3rd Gen pistols. Bottom line is that I'm a big fan of 3rd Gen and P-series SIG's.

You can't go wrong buying the 229 but since they are both 40s, I don't think you'll see (or feel) much difference.

That is what I was thinking. I like the 229 in .40 and .357 but wouldn't buy another SIG with DAK unless you are just crazy about them. You might really enjoy the SIG with the usual DA/SA trigger system. And, for some reason, and I know it doesn't make sense, my impression is that the 229 handles .40 recoil better than the 226. Maybe it is just my imagination... ? The 229 "seems" to sit lower in my hand.
