Pacific..... on HBO

My wife has never seen Band of Brothers. We've been watching it on demand for the past few nights. We'll finish it tonight and then start Pacific.

Can't wait!

Yeah, baby. I've got it DVRed, but I'll be watching it as soon as it comes on tonight.

I do believe this is written based on the lives and stories of actual Marines... who were an active part of the writing and filming process.
I am expecting it to be VERY good... and hopefully up to the standard of Band of Brothers.

When I was a student at Alabama College in the early 60's, I saw Dr Sledge on campus frequently. A friend that had him for upper level classes told me about him. He seemed to be liked by his students and was well respected.
Who would have thought....

Well, here's my review:

If you don't have HBO, get it before next Sunday.

If you don't have a high def TV, this is the perfect excuse to get one.

Simply magnificent.

Better than Band of Brothers, so far. At this point in BoB, we were just getting annoyed with Captain Sobel.

03 Springfields, Thompsons, Reisings, BARs, a heavy looking water cooled Browning, and a nice shot with a 1911. What's not to like?

conveniently my cable provider was having a promo and giving out 3 months free HBO. just signed up last week so i could watch "The Pacific" 1st run.

I've been looking forward to watching the "Pacific" since HBO first started advertising. Watched the first installment last night and was not overly impressed. Maybe it will get better over the coming weeks.
Maybe I was still feeling the after effects of the "Green Zone", a liberally slanted view of the Iraq war my wife and I saw on Saturday.

How is the book by Stephen Ambrose's son? Has anybody read it and can give a review?

I read part of it in a store. I didn't see much that I didn't know, apart from some of the personal data. But I have read a fair amount about WW II.

Someone less informed might find it all new. It is well written. I didn't read far enough to see if it contained data on the fall of Singapore and the Jap drive into Burma that threatened India. I suspect that it's limited to US action zones. But it may include some info on activities with our allies in that area.

In fairness, the British action zones are mostly not in the Pacific, but in the areas touched by the Indian Ocean. However, the Dutch East Indies and the like should probably be included, being too often neglected, and US forces retreating from the Phillipines tried to stop the Japs there, without success. Those able to move on went to Australia.

I'm reading a book now on the P-38 Lightning that has quite a bit about that plane's use in the Pacific. I hope the movie includes some planes.

BTW, P-40 pilots flying off of Guadacanal were sometimes fired on by US Navy pilots! The Aussie pilots even painted the back half of their P-40 fuselages white to make it clear that they weren't Japs, and the danged sailors stiill shot at them! How hard is it to tell a P-40 from any Jap fighter? The deep chin on the radiator of most of them is very distinctive. As far as I know, our Army Air Corps and RAAF pilots ddn't shoot at Wildcats in return. But they must have been tempted!

RNZAF pilots eventually got some Corsairs. I guess the Navy pilots could recognize those!

I read the book based on John Basilone's experiences a while back. Very good read. He won the MOH posthumously and killed on either Iwo Jima or Okinawa.

actually reddogge john basilone was awarded the medal of honor for action during the battle for the island of Guadalcanal and was killed in action on Iwo Jima he was also awarded the navy cross and the purple heart

Here are a few other similarities which Tom Hanks omitted:

An obscurantist enemy which sends out the brainwashed to die without surrendering.

An enemy with a proclivity for beheading the helpless (prisoners, civilians, etc.) with edged weapons.

An enemy which uses rape as a weapon.

An enemy for whom childish cruelty is virtually an ideological principle.

Maybe Tom Hanks should do a mini-series on the Rape of Nanking. Maybe he might learn something.
