How is the book by Stephen Ambrose's son? Has anybody read it and can give a review?
I read part of it in a store. I didn't see much that I didn't know, apart from some of the personal data. But I have read a fair amount about WW II.
Someone less informed might find it all new. It is well written. I didn't read far enough to see if it contained data on the fall of Singapore and the Jap drive into Burma that threatened India. I suspect that it's limited to US action zones. But it may include some info on activities with our allies in that area.
In fairness, the British action zones are mostly not in the Pacific, but in the areas touched by the Indian Ocean. However, the Dutch East Indies and the like should probably be included, being too often neglected, and US forces retreating from the Phillipines tried to stop the Japs there, without success. Those able to move on went to Australia.
I'm reading a book now on the P-38 Lightning that has quite a bit about that plane's use in the Pacific. I hope the movie includes some planes.
BTW, P-40 pilots flying off of Guadacanal were sometimes fired on by US Navy pilots! The Aussie pilots even painted the back half of their P-40 fuselages white to make it clear that they weren't Japs, and the danged sailors stiill shot at them! How hard is it to tell a P-40 from any Jap fighter? The deep chin on the radiator of most of them is very distinctive. As far as I know, our Army Air Corps and RAAF pilots ddn't shoot at Wildcats in return. But they must have been tempted!
RNZAF pilots eventually got some Corsairs. I guess the Navy pilots could recognize those!
