I did not know I have been either spoiled or luck to have only eaten paper shell pecans my whole life. I just bought a bag of pecans and they are terrible. They are as hard as walnuts to crack open. When they do open, they are terrible to pull the meat out from the shell. And to top it off, they taste like dirt. They are just going to go into the trash I think. Is there a favored species of these that taste best and have the thin shells that I need to look for? I did a random Google search and zowie I had not a clue there were so many.

A lot depends on the amount of moisture the tree receives during the Winter/Spring months. We have a lot of native Pecan trees, and some years the fruit is wonderful and moist, other years they will be dry and bitter. Paper shells are excellent pecans, but the case nut borers can be a serious problem unless you maintain a spraying schedule. Last year all of our nuts were hollow due to the drought - this year will be the same because the drought is much worse. I don't see any sign of acorns this year either, but it's a little early.

that's why you should drink at least four 8oz glasses of water per day!

I'm on the receiving end of a bag of fresh, Green Valley, Arizona pecans a couple of times per year.

Thank you brother Dave!

Mmmmmmmmmmm good ! ! !

I serve three small congregations. Prior to this appointment, I served two congregations. For the last several years I've collected and sold pecans to supplement our income. I've usually collected about 400 lbs. The prices have usually been in the neighborhood of $ .80-1.05/lb., depending on when and what was sold. Last year the price was over $2.00/lb. for the same types/grades of pecans. However I collected less than 25 lbs. of pecans. This year I hope things will be better. We'll see.

Now, as to taste, try some Stewart pecans. They are very good when good growing conditions prevail. They are also not hard to crack. Cheers!

+++ 1 on the "Stewart" or "Stuart" pecans.

We had a dozen Stewart/Stuart pecan trees on the property when I was a kid ...... the shells were easy to crack open and the pecan-meat always had a great flavor.
