Parkerized finish

I picked up a Parkerized Browning Hi-Power over the weekend. The finish was in good condition, but the pistol was stored with a rubber grip sleeve on it. When I removed the sleeve, the back and front strap looked to be rusted, but a little rubbing with a cloth took the majority of it off.

There is still a faint discoloration in those two areas- not really that noticeable, but still there (probably because I'm looking for it!). Does anyone have any tips for taking it off, or is it in the finish now (if that makes sense)? I don't want to damage the existing finish by using something abrasive.

Thanks.

Don't use an abrasive -- coat it with a CLP-type oil, let it sit for a half hour or so, agitate with a nylon brush (old, clean toothbrush will do), wipe down.

That's the gentlest way of removing the most rust; you could try some gentle agitation with an oiled bronze brush, too, but proceed carefully.

Best preventative going forward will be a light oil wipe down on the entire gun, which it should have anyway (parkerization holds and is preserved by a little oil in its pores).

Did you use a little oil on that cloth?

Thank you for the replies.

I should clarify- I don't think it was rust, but it was orange-brownish in color, like a stain.

I actually used Hoppe's. It took the majority off, but I can still see where it was located..
