The "Breakfast at Tiffany's" thread got me to
thinking how common it was, even in modest
restaurants and diners to always have some
parsley sprigs on the plate.

True, most people didn't eat it. I did

But it added a touch of elegance even to
a meatloaf dinner. I wish it was still placed
on a plate.

Today, the only time I see parsley at a restaurant
is in flake form sprinkled about a so-called
gourmet breakfast.

Naw, it's got to be an honest to goodness spring
or two of parsley, not just flakes.

I understand the custom of parsley on a plate
goes back to the ancient Romans who used
it to freshen their breathes after dining.

Well, I guess that is taken care of at a lot of
places with a dish of after dinner mints at the
checkout/hostess station.

Where's my parsley? :(

The first time I saw parsley on my plate, I ate it.
The civilized city folks I was with were horrified!
You can’t take him anywhere!
He’ll embarrass the hell out of you!
I also haven’t seen any parsley in years.
I hope I can be lucky enough to see some again some time.
Don’t look!
Cause I will eat it!

I like parsley, too. I was recently reading a recipe and noticed that it called for flat-leaf parsley. Don’t think I’ve ever noticed that before. (Flat leaf, I mean.)

Yep i would eat the parsley when i was a kid. I also loved the basket full of crunchy breadsticks and pads of cold butter to munch on.
Not sure if i would bother with parsley now but i would tear into the breadstick and butter bowl if i could lol

Parsley was always a part of most of my mother's recipes. My son told me that he misses his grandmother's cooking, and he wants me to recreate her recipes.

Parsley is one of the easiest herbs to grow.
The more you clip off, the thicker it grows.
If you really like it, buy some seeds and enjoy!

Parsely is good......

Nothing wrong with eating parsley put on your plate. They say, "Oh, that's just garnish.' I say, "So you're just supposed to throw it away?

Many years ago, when Shoney's was a 'good' restaurant, they put parsley garnish on everything. My friend could never resist saying. "What's green and sings?"........ELVIS PARSLEY! They had a sandwich called a 'Slim Jim' that was my absolute favorite. Of course they started changing it until it didn't resemble the original.

You HAVE to eat it to keep 'em from using it on the next guy's plate! ;)

AKA Italian parsley. It's delicious, much better than the curly variety that used to decorate plates. Most grocery stores sell it.

I’m a legit executive Chef with 27 years experience under my belt. Flat leaf (Italian) parsley in its fresh form is a very real herb with many recipe-specific applications. Off the top of my head, no Italian meatball recipe should be taken seriously without copious amounts of it. Same for any fresh tomato ‘salad’s. It’s a critical component in many herb blends as well, for me - fines herbes and any blend meant for general application to fish, eggs, spring vegetables and/or lite poultry.

I still make boiled red skin potatoes with parsley butter the way my mother did. Rinse, dry and chop a bunch of curley parsley. Add it to a stick of butter in a small pan and cook it down for a few minutes. Scoop a good amount on top of fork smashed potatoes and enjoy. It's a summer time favorite at our home! :p
