I useta. They were native to Md but must have been really susceptible to ag spray runoff. They mostly disappeared from the edges.. Darn deer were eating 'em up before they were ripe most of the time. My FIL and I planted them in our little piece of woods back east along with American Chestnuts and filberts. He never got to eat any as he passed away before they bore fruit. I like 'em,,my wife doesn't. She does like the chestnuts and filberts though...but ya have to beat the skwerls off'n the filberts to get any. Deer do like the paw paws. I put a fence around 2 paw paw trees/bushes. They were not large. PPs taste somewhat like bananas Another nut I do like is the beech nuts when the beech trees bear fruit. So do deer

Yes!! I discovered a huge grove of pawpaw trees along the banks of the Big Walnut Creek near our house. Every year at this time my wife and I put on boots, cross the creek with a 5gal bucket to shake a few trees. They must be soft because unlike some fruit, pawpaws won't ripen off the tree. They usually turn black. You peel them with your teeth, take a bite of the soft fruit and spit out the large brown seeds. I personally like the taste, but some don't like the consistency.

I've tried making pies, pudding, and bread, but eating them right off the tree is best. Each year in southern Ohio people attend the pawpaw festival which features pawpaw beer.

Trees are difficult to propagate because they spread from a larger tree and do not have a deep root system. I bought several seedlings from a nursery and planted them in my yard.

This year is the first in many years we missed the harvest because of my leaky heart valve, afib, and feeling generally weak. Maybe next year!! Heart surgery in December.

I heard it as, a three legged dog walks into a bar and says "has anybody seen my paw???" :D

I thought paw paw was something that the guy on that swamp people show says all the time????

Nobody's mentioned Zebra Swallowtails. Their butterfly that prefer PawPaw trees. Not really like the yellow or black ones. The Zebra seem to the less wide but longer. I spent years in my youth trying to catch one with a butterfly net. Only later did I discover they needed the Paw Paw trees. Guess there were none where I grew up. Dang.

I did catch one bedraggled specimen. It was pretty worn and near the end of its days. For me it was still a prize. Funny how hobbies like bugs stay with you over the years. I still look at the critters buzzing and fluttering around. Especially on vacations. Too late this year. Those who live around the trees should look next summer. White critters with black striping on the wings.

That's on account of you never had my Cranberry-Orange-Guinness slow braised venison top sirloin. ;)

I guess you got me there. Whats a Guinness??..oh wait a minute...is that some kinda furrin beer??:D Got to admit..I just dug me some taters yesterday...and cut some late broccoli. Dat's makin me hungry. An I got plenty of them deers. I could plunk one with my ol 45. I am a little annoyed at 'em anyway. They been digging my taters and ate the last of my sweet corn up too. An them persimmons sound good too.

I know nothing about paw paws, but my sister in Louisville is a bit of an authority. She is a plant scientist, and works for a paw paw project at KSU in Frankfort, managing their web site.

I love them. Eat them every year. We substitute paw-paw for
zucchini in bread recipe. Wife cuts them up and makes kind of
Waldorf Salad with them. Lady over at Augusta,WVa. Use to
make Paw-Paw pie, similar to pumpkin pie. Wish I would have
got her recipe. We even made Paw-Paw butter on year. People
around here call them West Virginia Bannanas. Went Squirrel
hunting the other night, Paw-Paw patch was full of yellow jackets
did manage to snag a few. Buddy of mine wants to try making
Paw-Paw wine.

Picking up paw paws......

I've heard the song, but I never knew what the hell a 'paw paw' was.

PS Looking at the map, we are slightly out of paw paw range. So it makes sense that I haven't seen one.
