Pawn Shop Find? 27-2

Model 27s that shipped with target hammer and trigger also shipped with target stocks and in the wood box. Somebody changed something. Model 27s shipped in cardboard boxes with standard Magna stocks and standard hammer and trigger until 1975, when they shipped them in full target mode in the wood box. I think your serial number would have shipped in the 1970-71 timeframe, so maybe it was special ordered or someone changed out the hammer and trigger. Is the serial number stamped on the right stock?

Everything certainly looks original. You're saying the right stock should have matching serial number on the inside?
I googled "target stocks" and the pictures look like the grips that are on this gun.

Congratulations!! I looked a few years for a 27, and was never successful.
Did end up up with a real 28 no dash though. Your 27 is a shooter. There is nothing wrong with that. You won't cry if you put a scratch on it. You may find that a good clean up will pretty it up some. Enjoy your 27! Bob

The gun in the picture you show is wearing magna stocks and should have the serial number on the inside of the right panel if original to the gun.

The pawn shops we have around here never have anything. Neither do the LGS. All plastic or new stuff. Flitz, kroil( if necessary), BRONZE wool, pure copper penny and renaissance wax, patience and a gentle touch and you should have that baby looking like a million bucks.

Nice find!!!

Do you have a link to a video with this method? Never heard of any of that. Thanks!

If you are asking me for a video of cleaning, and removing light surface rust and freckles, I do not know of one. Those are just the things I use. The kroil disolves rust, a pure copper penny used lightly will remove light surface rust and is softer than steel. Use a wheat penny edge. The bronze wool with kroil will move surface rust, done LIGHTLY. When all satisfied that the surface is clean, wipe wit denatured alcohol or something to remove the oil on the gun. very lightly polish with flitz polish.Don't use pressure. Just be gentle, wipe off polish, and then wax, or oil if you prefer, or whatever you use as a rust preventer

So I finally got this thing home. They do have a serial number on the inside of the right panel but the serial number is not that of the frame.

Frame: N56882
Stock: 279821

Does that mean they are not original?
Does that mean I should shop for some sexier grips?

If I'm doing my research correctly the gun is a 70-71 and the grips are 75-77 is this correct?

Is there a way to find out if the hammer and the trigger are original?

Any suggestions on grips? Do these make it less desirable? Just leave as is? Find some cool aftermarket grips?

Metalfarm you made a very nice buy on that gun. Congrats :).

IMO, the pawnshop owner didn't know what the real value of that gun was .... to your benefit.

You asked about how to find out if the trigger and hammer are original to the gun and the only way to do that is to get it lettered.

In regards to the stocks......if it were mine I would be happy with the ones that came with it, but it's yours and you should do whatever makes you happy.

Don

Finding the original stocks would be, well, like finding hens teeth!! Anyway, it is a shooter, and a good one, I'll bet, so put on whatever stocks your want, that are comfortable, that you like, etc. Maybe you like those, I don't know. I know that I absolutely cannot shoot Magna stocks. I put Hogue stocks on all my shooting guns, except some that I leave the original target stocks on and shoot mostly single action with. Double action guns get Hogue rubber grips. Much better for me. So, get what you shoot best with and enjoy your new toy@@!

Glad it was still there for you to buy. Me? I would have bought it before I left the store. Why did you wait?

You got totally hosed.

But in the spirit of helping a fellow out...I'll cover your loss and add shipping so you can send it down and never have to be reminded of your horrible mistake.

:)

You did GREAT. Congratulations.

below pics are my 27-2 w/ 3-1/2" barrel, wide hammer, wide trigger and what my factory Letter defined as "Goncalo Alves Target Stocks". I have heard them called "presentation stocks" but not by the factory experts.

Mine is a real hoot to shoot...….if you use an indoor range be prepared for a LOT of noise and flash.

As others have said...you for sure stole yours. Offer $599, or even $999 on mine would for sure get you OTD (Out The Door) of my place...BUT......WITHOUT the gun.

Have fun and for sure...post your very first 6 round full Maggie range report (not the second or later...just the first). HINT..I threw my first away before anyone could see it.:D It is a LOT of gun in your hand!

Congratulations. That's a great deal. Definitely on my want list.
David.

Needs vs Wants

Leave the perfect stuff for the rich guys. They deserve them, I don't. I yesterday picked a 13-3 RB 95% affordable and they took my S American 44 spcl for trade, glad to get rid of something I could not find fire control parts for; I lost very well. If you don't want it for a shooter, leave it to beaver. If it checks out mechanically, I'd be glad to have it at that figure.
