Curious: I've been shooting a a PC Model 627 for the last couple of years. I have about 2500 rounds through it although most of them have been .38 Specials. Hypothetically, if I were shooting magnum loads as a steady diet is it possible to calculate how many rounds I should be able to shoot through this gun before I could expect reliability problems?

The Model 27 variants and the Model 29 variants are built on the same frame. It takes really hot 44 loads to cause problems in a 29. The 357 isn't nearly as powerful as the 44, so a 27 should last much longer. You hear of Model 29's shooting loose all the time, but never of a Model 27 or 28 that's done it.

How long is that? I can't say, but as long as the loads are within SAAMI spec, I'd guess in the hundreds of thousands. Put another way, the ammo it takes to wear out a Model 27 would cost as much as several new revolvers.

Thanks for the feedback. Seems reasonable. It's funny though. I have a 1983 vintage Ruger Security Six that is actually a lot tighter than my 627. That, of coarse, is where the comparison ends.

I probably won't live long enough to shoot the 627 loose...LOL. And, I've never read any credible concerns over the cylinder walls or forcing cones cracking due to the 8-round capacity.

A lot depends on how you shoot it, as well as the ammo.

If you shoot a lot of fast double action, your cylinder bolt cuts will wear a lot quicker than someone who shoots mostly single action.

About 60% of my shooting is done DA. I generally take about 7-10 seconds between rounds. The DA trigger pull on the PC version is almost a work of art, and I do my best shooting that way.

2500 is about two month's shooting for me. I don't think you have to worry about the life of your 627. I do all my shooting DA with a nice 4 1/2 lb trigger. It's smoother than single action.

I once heard Jerry M. say he shoots 50k rounds a year practice on his revolvers with no changing of the parts during the year. So it sounds like you may shoot on brother without worry....:D

No that the ammo shortage here in San Antonio is over I intend to shoot this a lot more...if I can liberate it from my wife.

I have an 586 that I have had for 30 years that has had thousands of .38 special loads through it. It still times like it did when I bought it. I also put thousands of rounds of .38 target loads through an old pre model 27 and it is still in fine shape. I doubt you can wear it out, even if you shoot full power .357 loads all the time. The most wear would be on the hand and ratchets. You can always put in a wider hand to correct timing issues and when you wear out the ratchets, send it back for some new ones. Even with reloading, you will spend many times the cost of the gun on ammo in the process. Have a great fun time!
