Peep Sight or Scope

My first rifle was a rem 511 P , I used for years but when our girls started shooting I used the same ole rifle but with Lyman front sight and a merit brand changeable aperture .

They both became good rifle shooters but moved on to scoped 22lrs and centerfire rifles .

I much prefer irons over scopes. Was taught by my Grandfather how to shoot irons when I was 10. In the Corps we shot irons out to 500 yards. I have more iron sighted rifles than scoped ones. I used scopes as my eyes got worse. Then I had my cataracts taken care of by the optometrist. Now I use strictly irons. With my Winchester 52D and Redfield International sights, I can see well enough to pick up a 10 meter air rifle target at 50 yards.

Good shooting ! I can shot groups like that or slightly less with the same ammo at 100 yards in a couple 22lr rifles with a scope .

Your groups at 50 yards with a good rifle and receiver sights is fine shooting .

You obviously prefer hunting with vintage type rifles and it would be a shame to lose the spirit of what you’re doing by adding a telescope - unless you needed it. Since you’re confident and comfortable with your rifles as they are, for now at least, I don’t see the reason to change.

Those are air rifle targets and the bullseyes are 1 inch in diameter. At 100 yards most crosshairs would probably cover the bullseye.

The target below is a 3 3/4 inch bullseye fired at 50 yards with iron sights. It is easier to center the target in the aperture. The overall group is 0.053 center to center for 5 shots.

For me, I've been using green dot sights. For me the green dots hold up against the sun better than red dots.

I had cataracts taken out from both eyes. Before the operations the optical sights looked like they had green splats. After the operations now I have nice round green dots.

Those are some awesome targets, guys. The last High Power Match I went to, I shot a 200-10X. And came in 3rd; got out X-ed. Peeps on paper work fine. I’ve shot peeps a lot in the past.

But in order for peeps to work well, the lighting has to be right. Unfortunately, my range faces due south. In the wintertime, on sunny days, peeps are just about useless for me. I have to use a scope.

I’ve killed a lot of deer with iron sighted revolvers, then peep sighted straight walled pistol caliber carbines. I made a really tough shot in 2023 on the 3rd last day of season with a 1.5-5X Leupold that I wouldn’t have even thought about taking with a peep sight. That sealed it for me. Scopes.

I've got peep sights on most of the guns I own, Skinner,Mojo, Williams. If I can install a peep it gets one. They work great with my old eyes.My first center fire rifle was a M1 carbine bought through the mail from the Kleins catalogue.Basic training with a M14 and than a M16.Just installed a Skinner peep on a Mod 92 clone. Hey hardluk I see you used to hunt in the fakahatchee strand , I live there right now, got a dozen deer I feed in the yard every day. Not hunting them anymore got soft in my old age.

I don't use one of those " most scopes " and can see a 1" aim point at 100 yards easily . I have a Fine-plex reticle in older burris fullfeild 6-24 scope on my savage bv and I do hunt with it some and shot pest on occasions with it but I am getting old.

Your good shooter with your receiver sights on the winny 52 so enjoy it .

I was purdy good to with my upgraded rem 511P too . I just moved to scopes when I turned 19 so I could better see a glimps of a deer to see if it was worth shooting and legal then pick a place to shoot between branches at deer in a sw fl swamp known as the fakahatchee stand . Open sights or peeps where no help there .

I,ll have to disagree with you there, all the deer I have taken in the deep strand were with peep sights, average distance was probably less than 50 yards. When hunting on the perimeter of the strand, in the prairies, on my cypress buggy I used a scoped rifle.

I've spent a lot of time looking to judge and seeing nothing or not mature enough to harvest in the fakahatchee but also spotted deer at a distance and watch them till I can get enough input to ether let it go or find that right spot to shot . But I have also stepped on to a grade to work back to camp and there it is but 250 yards off . I can make that final decision and make the shot. If you ever hunted in fakahatchee strand then you should know what I mean .

Our camp was accessed off the gator alley end . I miss camping & hunting down there but hated it when the park service took charge . You remember how even the wild life officers hated the park rangers . Had a killing at our groups 32miles marker camp and lost the airboat camp to the Miccosukee's.

I started hunting far more out of state or for hogs off the old 4mile and around bubba franks property . Finally sold out and moved to NC mountains some 26 years ago . You have 9 years one me so I understand why you hunted with iron or peeps sights in the swamps . My older hunting buddy did the same but scoped rifle out side of the thick swamps . All my hunting buddys are gone today !
