Here's the pepper spray I've been using for the past several years:

UDAP web page

While not unhappy with the active ingredients, I've grown unhappy with the activating mechanisms. Two different ones have become unstable to the point where they can be discharged while supposedly on "safe". We wouldn't tolerate that in a firearm, and I'm not real keen on the idea with the pepper sprayers either.

So, what do y'all like/use/recommend?

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm aware that the the contents are wicked. One of the canisters ruptured in a vehicle (windows rolled up on a summer day); not blaming the company for that one, user error, I'm owning that one. I sucked the liquid out of the car seat with the hand attachment of the carpet cleaner, and when I poured the dirty liquid out in the sink or toilet - even as dilute as it was, it really caught me off guard by how it stung my eyes and lungs.

MSI, the owners of the "Mace" trademark, tend to have very good QC and testing procedures in place. Galls (www.galls.com) or many other sources should have their products. Fox Labs also offers a good product.

I just ordered one of the Kimber Pepper Blasters for my wife to carry in her purse at work. It seems like it uses something pyrotechnic instead of compressed air to fire the pepperspray. Hopefully I'll never have to know how well it works, but I'll be able to get a feel for the quality.

You can also order one from Kimber that sort of looks like a double barrel shotgun. After you fire both "barrels" you can reload it with fresh rounds.

You can see them at www.kimberamerica.com.

This is the only pepperspray we are authorized to carry. This stuff works great on people and dogs. I have first hand experience with both.
Get the spring loaded flip top. Works much better than all those goofy safety riddled ones.

Whatever you use aim for the chest and move upward this makes it harder for the receiver to duck the spray.

Just remember, if you're state is like ours, then the commercial stuff is watered down versus what local LE gets. I think here it is reduced by 10%. I would rather stick with my .38 as I have seen even the LE stuff not always work on people.

yes .... I'm liking the looks of the foxlabs products. Thanks for the replies, and for the links.

Oh, and thanks for the "tactical" suggestion, 7.62foryou.

This isn't for me, I virtually always carry. This is for some ladies in my family who don't - yet.

Fox Labs here too.

Are you wanting it for people or bears? Obviously for bears you want the big fogger type dispensers.

For bears (or other large animals) you put out a huge cloud as the animal charges into it. Keep spraying as you back up. Hope it turns around and runs. Go home change your underwear.

MSI makes a "triple action" that I've been fond of. It mixes some old fashioned tear gas in with the OC. That way if you miss a bit and get someone in the chest, the tear gas is supposed to waft up. It also has a UV dye for the "third part" of the triple.

Only a few states mandate lower percentages of OC content. Michigan did, but the law was often ignored. A few also do limit the size of the cannister. Bear spray, since it is ostensibly meant for bears, is still legal in some of these places.

MSI offers their cannisters in pink now. That's what my wife carries.

I've tended to carry OC in addition to a firearm for the simple reason that it can often work on unruly animals.

I wonder about spraying pepper spray in an enclosed area, say to repell someone in a boat cabin. I have read there is a (spray) gel type formula which sticks to the attacker but doesn't float around to affect the person doing the spraying also.
Any suggestions or experineces?
Steve

Pepper spray - any suggestions?
I don't like it.
It makes the food taste funny, and I got deathly ill the last time I ate any.
I've gone back to a peppermill.

If you have a friend who is in law enforcement, you can get some Cap-Stun. It's pretty darn good but is only sold to Law Enforcement.
