There is no shortage of 637 and 642 variants, especially the 642, which I understand is S&W's biggest seller. For various (undeserved IMO) reasons, the 638, a favorite of mine, is not as popular and has been shunted aside by the PC. I wish the PC would produce "gussied up" 638 models.

Good idea. The M49 is one of my favorites.

I like to have a PC M638 to go with it.

I like it!. I have a 637pc and have to say it has the BEST action I've seen out of S&W on any of their PC/Pro revolvers. (I've owned my share to compare.) To have that action on a 638/438 (My favorite model) would be sweet!
