I have never owned a performance center revolver. Right now I am in the market for a 38 special J frame. There is almost $100 difference between the Performance Center and the standard version of the same model J frame. My question is. Is the difference enough to justify the price difference? I have owned several Smith and Wesson revolvers and they all have been fine firearms. I just wonder if I should spend the extra hundred dollars for the Performance Center

You do not mention what you are looking at.

S&W actually offers three types of firearms.

You have already mentioned Production and Performance Center. These are made in two different facilities. A PC firearm is built to tighter tolerances and has many features not found on the production models, often made of materials not used in standard production. Because the PC changes out their tooling much more frequently and the features, not to mention they are usually small quantities of each variation, the price differences are quite a bit. I am a big fan of Performance Center guns for both their uniqueness and performance.

This brings us to the third style of S&W, the PRO series. These are production floor guns that get sent to the Performance Center for a few PC features to be added. These are usually a GREAT value because the various upgrades would cost several hundred dollars to have done by a gunsmith after the purchase however the MSRP is usually $100 or less above the price of the production gun.

A pro series is worth the difference if these are features that you want or would use. If the features on the particular gun you are looking at make no difference to you then they are not worth the money.

Buds has the M637 in both standard and performance. I guess it comes down to choosing which I would be most happy with.

Is the PC J frame model the "Gunsmoke" version of the 637?

Actually Buds has 4 different 637s currently in stock. Two production and two PC.

Myself I would buy the 637PC with the wood grips, product code 170349.

I did not like the appearance of the 637 Gunsmoke when I handled it, but others do.

The gunsmoke is double action only which I do not care for but I like the looks of the grips on it better. I suspect that if I go with the performance center it will be the one with the wooden grips. I can always put some other grips on it.

I just purchased a PC .460xvr , and this is my first revolver. The only thing I can compare mine to is my buddies that I have shot at my gun club and revolver rentals at my local indoor shooting range. My first admiring impression is the trigger. My .460 PC trigger breaks like glass , so smooth and a very light pull in s/a mode, feels about the same as my long guns and they are tuned to about 2.5#. I would easily categorize the PC triggers along with my precision aftermarket long gun Timmney and Geissele triggers. Fit and finish is absolutely top of the line.

Performance Center revolvers rock!

I concur with Road_Clam. I owned a Performance Center 386PD, and I now own a PC Model 627-5...both .357s with excellent trigger pulls and fit & finish. Very fine revolvers, and I feel worth the extra $!

Thanks to colt_saa for his lovely photos of my special love, the Wyatt/Deep Cover 637. Outside of the grips, I absolutely adore my two. Only thing wrong, I don't own a 3rd!

There is also a 637PC which is not the Wyatt variant. I've found its double action to be little different than the standard model 637. Both are fine guns, IMO.

You could always buy one of each, and then NOT SELL the one you don't prefer. Can never have enough snubs. How many does one need? How many pockets do you have... on all your clothing put together?
