I was under the impression certain designs were used for certain time periods....materials, etc.

yes, most of it is pretty "general", different company owner, different vendors, etc., but always expect overlaps and stuff shipped out of sequence, or held in stock , late or slow selling models, so this can be very "subjective" as said above, the 3rd edition,SCS&W,, covers it "better" than anything else out there so far...........
