METV has the one hour episodes on in the morning. I usually skip the first half hour and just watch the courtroom session. it may be just because it is television but I didn't think potential witnesses would be allowed in the courtroom during testimony by someone else.

I noticed that every time the camera looks across the courtroom there sure is a lot on nervous people hoping this session gets over with in a hurry so they don't get called to the witness stand

Unless somebody asks for witnesses to be sequestered, they may ordinarily observe.

I have most of the novels. I was reading them in high school after the TV show went off the air. I'm recording the shows now so I can watch everything I couldn't stay up to watch when they were on TV originally.

In Kansas sequestration is mandatory only when requested and generally only authorized at a preliminary hearing. It tend to be unusual circumstances to obtain a sequestration order at trial.

They made Raymond Burr lose 50 pounds to get the part.

William Talman who played Hamilton Burger was fired from the cast in 1960 when he was indicted on a morals charge. Seemed he'd been caught at a pot party with minors present. Raymond Burr as well as a petition from viewers got him his job back.

William Hopper, who played Drake, was Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper's son.

One of the greatest lines ever on TV happened on the first remake show in the 80s when Della was indicted for murder. The policeman in charge told Della he hoped she knew a good lawyer.

Raymond Burr was the perfect defense attorney, always asked the right questions of his clients to close the case in their favor. Paul Drake was his perfect go-to man for info. Hamilton Burger would even give Perry that look of "ya got it right."

I recently bought the entire 1st season episodes on DVD's. I always enjoy seeing the future stars as guests before they made it big. I also think I recently read where Perry actually did lose a case during the run. I also saw where Della Streets real life son is also an actor. Barbara Hale was also a spokeswoman for Amana appliances. I clearly have too much time on my hands in this here retired life.
Raymond Burr also had an "interesting" life in the later years.

As a 15 year old this had a lifetime effect on me.

I think is is sort of sad that these 50 year old shows far better than anything produced today. Perry MAson, leave it to beaver, my three sons, the Roy Rogers show, Lone Ranger, Barney Miller, etc. part of my daily fare.

Earle Stanley Gardner, the creator of Perry Mason, modeled the character on one of his close friends, Park Street, a prominent San Antonio lawyer back in the 1930's, but not a criminal lawyer. That's why Perry's secretary was named Della Street.

William Talman Anti-Smoking Ad 1968 - YouTube

I saw William Talman on the anti-smoking ad and he looked BAD. I think he died the next week or thereabouts.

He must have been really typecast as Hamilton Burger, because after the Perry Mason series stopped I only remember seeing him in one guest shot on The Invaders.

In Tennessee, the court asks if the attorneys wish to impose "the rule." If so, every witness, with the exception of the primary parties, Plaintiff(s) and Defendant(s), is required to leave the courtroom and be sequestered.

The witnesses are advised not to discuss the case or facts but, this has already been done in pretrial preparation. Witnesses for the parties are also segregated.

Once a witness has testified, they may be allowed to stay in the courtroom unless they are to be called as a rebuttal witness. The presentation of witnesses, as depicted on Perry Mason and most other TV shows is, for the part, purely Hollywood and bares no similarity to reality.
