Pete Rose

First.. I am not a baseball fan at all... but Pete Rose is/was an amazing player and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame... he gambled and couldn't shut up... he didn't beat his wife or run dog fights or use steroids.. that I'm aware of...

Great guy, great player, but it simply comes down to the fact that we all must take responsibility for our actions.

If he were let in, what message would that give to all the youth that think sports figures are heroes?

I grew up in Cincinnati and some of my best childhood memories are getting to go to the old Crosley Field and watching him. He truly was a force on the field. He was a colorful individual and his private life was a mess but that all was put aside when he stepped onto the field UNTIL it was revealed about his gambling issues. Such a shame because he truly belonged in the Hall Of Fame. I just watched a rerun of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson when Pete was a guest, he still had a tremendous sense of humor about his situation, even after he had been banned from baseball.
May He Rest In Peace.

The first time seeing him play (and my first live MLB game) was when dad took me to Crosley in 1966 to watch them beat the Cards.

I was and still am hooked.

He committed the one offense that EVERYBODY in baseball knows will result in a lifetime ban. He got what he deserved.

And I was always against any consideration of putting him in the HOF while he was alive. A lifetime ban means a LIFETIME ban.

Well, now he is dead. Sorry that he is, but since his lifetime is over, I would not object to putting him into the Hall posthumously.

My dad frequently got tickets from the steel suppliers. We got to see a bunch of games. My favorites were the Sunday double headers at Crosley Field. We would go to the early church service, change clothes at the church afterwards and make a beeline for the stadium. In those days you could carry in your own drinks and picnic baskets. As soon as we got settled into our seats the transistor radios with the ear plug were passed out so we could listen to the radio commentary on WLW while we watched the game live.
When the Reds made the move to Riverfront Stadium we still got to see a lot of games but the atmosphere somehow just wasn't the same.
I loved watching Pete play because he left it all out on the field. I also hope he finally is inducted into the HOF.

He would probably have squeeked his way in if the whole “I was a 34 year old married guy with two kids and I admit to having a sexual relationship with a 16 year old girl” thing hadn’t come along. Of course the girl says it all started before she was 16 (age of consent in Ohio) but it went away because it was merely sleazy, not clearly illegal, and probably not all that uncommon in the MLB.

It did derail his let me in campaign, though. I say let him in now.

Did he bet on baseball games? Did he bet on games he was playing in? RIP Pete.
