Photo's Of Pre-29, 5 Screw, 4", Serial #S159907

Nice find I myself did just that same thing. Sold several K and off brand to start adding to the N frame collection. 5 screw 4" 44 Magnum with all the goods can't beat that. Let us pray that it will be many happy long years before your daughters get there inheritance. The fact that you have a positive attitude is A+.

Thanks for sharing

4" Pre-29 5 Screws

The 4" 5 screw guns are kinda hard to track somewhat. I have seen a correspondence from the factory (IIRC) that initially the first run of 44 magnums was to be 3500 6.5" guns, then 3500 4" guns. I think the demand for 6.5" exceeded expectations so subsequently the 4" guns did not go into regular production until early 1957. We do know through invoices and such there were at least 30 or so shipped in 1956 but to date we can only account for about 12.
This gun S152574 shipped November 9 1956 as part of a shipment of 5 to Texas.

Another kind of an anomoly is that several early 4" guns were modified after the fact as the demand was still high for 6.5"
This gun S161554 shipped January 11, 1957 as a 4" gun, but was later returned to the factory for a 6.5" barrel.

To further add to the known disparigy (?) of Smith serial number I know of two other 1/11/57 shipped guns that are approximately 3000 numbers off of this gun both ways.

My wife gets the 629 no dash. 629 was my badge number to add icing to the cake.

Hang in there little brother, I'm sure some of your S and W brothers are praying for you, a very nice young lady in our small community is fighting that same battle right now, they have tried some new and unique treatments in North Carolina recently. Love your old Smith, I had a 357 mag until I traded it on a Merkel Model 8 double, wish I had my Smith back.LOL

Real nice magnum you have there. Best of luck to you. Take care of yourself and your family. God bless.
