Picked up a M&P 22!

In two weeks, I've put about 800 rounds through my M&P 9. Even using steel case Russian ammo, practice costs are adding up.

I decided to buy a M&P 22 for warmups, practice, and fun.

I love that the M&P 22's exterior dimensions are an exact match for the M&P 9. Everything feels the same.

The rear sight between the two isn't the same. I'd replace the M&P 22's rear sight with a M&P 9 stock rear sight, but a steel sight drifted onto a light-weight aluminum slide isn't a good idea.

I've field stripped, inspected, & cleaned it. I was very surprised at the copious amount of vaselene consistency assembly grease Walther packed into it.

I handled the M&P 22, and actually like the frame safety. I now wish I opted for the frame safety on my M&P 9.

I'm looking forward to shooting it tomorrow. Crossing my fingers that it all goes well.

Good luck with your new M&P22. My daughter and I love it. She was having issues with the SP101 327 recoil (even with 32 longs) and we went to the LGS to find a lighter recoiling gun for her While I was fondling the M&P9 fs and compact trying to make up my mind which I wanted she checked the M&P out and said it felt really good in her small hands. Enter the M&P22. I might have to trim the grip down a bit for her hands. I use the small backstrap on the 9 fs w/thumb safety I got for me so my hands aren't that big either. That is the only thing I would change on the 22, to have interchangable backstraps. It shoots really well and she has put around 1200 rounds through it. Even the wife likes to shoot the 22 (not really a handgun person). When I can shoot it, it's great to practice with inexpensive 22 ammo and have it feel the same feel as the bigger cal. guns. Uses the same holster for drawing practice too.

S&W says the M&P9 sight will work, but the M&P22's sight is adjustable up and down, but the 9mm's sight is not.

Mine had occasional failures to load. That is the round fired was slightly below the energy needed to extract and load the next round. It would extract OK, but the slide (apparently) didn't go back far enough to load the next round. As the gun gets broken in, this is getting less and less. Of course, if I wanted to use premium ammo like CCI Blazer or Mini Mags it would work fine. I use that ammo in my 1911 Kimber rimfire conversion and it runs 100%.

Enjoy your new M&P22, they are a ball to shoot. I too have a M&P9, M&P22, and a M&P CO2 gun I got from Midway.

As the gun gets broken in, this is getting less and less. Of course, if I wanted to use premium ammo like CCI Blazer or Mini Mags it would work fine.

Thanks for the insight. All .22lr rimfire semi-auto firearms have a break-in period that can be frustrating. I wondered how long this might be with the M&P 22.

I'm off to the range. To break it in, I have 200 rounds of CCI Mini Mags. 1 magazine, 200 rounds, gonna be interesting. I've been spoiled by my Ruger MKIII series and a McFadden Ultimate Clip Loader. I've become used to loading 4 mags in under a minute.

Went to the range this morning. I went through 100 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags without issue. I switched to Winchester 555 round bulk pack 36gr plated hollow points, and had no issues. I estimate I fired around 350 rounds of .22lr total.

My sights are dead-on nuts POA/POI from the factory, no adjustments needed. Trigger feel on the M&P 22 simulated the trigger feel on the M&P 9 as close as it can ever get.

I can say that in my hands, the M&P 22 is not as inherently accurate as my Ruger 22/45RP. The M&P 22 is no slouch: I can keep 2" diameter groups at 30ft. This is perfectly fine for what I need it to do.

I picked up the M&P 22 for an inexpensive training analog for the M&P 9. The M&P 22 fills that role perfectly.

I cut about 3" squares of cardboard, stick on a 2" diameter dot, and put them out between 21ft. - 30ft.

This is last week's M&P9 target, before I acquired the M&P 22.

I'm beginning to get tighter groups! I still need more practice.

The M&P 22 definitely helps me get better quality practice in with my M&P 9. I'm able to warm up & work out the kinks on the M&P 22. When I grab the M&P 9, I'm ready to go.

Before the M&P 22, I'd burn 300 - 350 rounds of 9mm through the M&P 9. This last range session, 100 rounds of 9mm.

I am about to buy one of these, but to complement my M&P 9 Pro Series 5". It has Novak green FO front and black rear sights.

Is there a sight set comparable that I can install on the M&P22?

My only complaint with the M&P 22 is the rear sight. I can use it, but I do much better with a 2 dot rear sight. I e-mailed S&W customer support to request a 2-dot rear sight if it exists.

Ditto. I've put at least 500 rounds (bulk Federal) through my M&P22 since getting it 2 months ago, and it's been flawless, just like my other M&Ps (a 9 and 9c). I'm so glad I got it to train with.

Before ever taking a shot with the 22, I asked S&W CS to send me the same white 2 dot sight that's on my 9c, and they did free of charge. While you're right, that it's not adjustable for elevation now, I can still shoot very well with it. If it's shooting low or high compared to the stock M&P22 rear sight, I don't know; I might just be adjusting. Either way, it provides the same site picture I'm used to.

After an afternoon of shooting earlier this month, I moved a fresh 8" target out the 50' line (indoor range) and shot 3 full magazines (36 rounds total) at it (standing, unsupported, and two-handed):

32 in the black on this 8" target, 2 in the white, 2 complete misses (one of which hit the target holder and produced the ricochet you see coming down from the top) At closer/defensive distances, I was easily blowing the bull and middle out of the targets. It's a great pistol, whether or not you use it for training on the M&P platform.

Picked mine up this weekend. Run 12 mags through it on Sun. Im a bit worried though. My first 4 mags were all over the place at 10 yards. 2 mags shot at 20 yards were worse yet. By mag 6 a pattern started to form that was down and to the left by 6". By mag 12 it was starting to improve a bit, but everything is low and left in a 5" group except for a flyer that seems to like going high and right on every mag. I did not clean this thing at all before shooting. 144 rounds total. Gonna clean it up and give it a try again. CCI mini mags and Tacticals.

Just Bought an M&P22

Bought a new M&P22 and some bulk Blazer ammo. The gun consistantly failed to eject and fire this ammo. I switched to CCI Mini Mags and a couple of boxes of Winchester with NO failures. Very nice handgun, easy to handle, accurate and just a pleasure to shhot.

The thing I like the most is that the M&P 22 is the same size & dimension as the M&P 9. If I can get the sights to be similar, it would make it an even better training companion. I'm also curious to see if my accuracy improves with a 2-dot rear sight.

Right now, the M&P 22 is accurate enough for my intended use. I find my Ruger 22/45 to be much more accurate.

IMO, all .22lr pistols are fun to shoot. I own a few:

• Ruger MKIII Std 4.75"
• Ruger 22/45RP 5.5"
• Ruger Super Single Six (1971)
• Colt Woodsman Series III (1970)
• M&P 22

The M&P 22 isn't the most accurate of the bunch, but it is by far the easiest and quickest to field strip & clean. That is one of the reasons why it's a "keeper".

I just received this reply from S&W customer service about a 2-dot rear sight:

"Hi John

We do not presently have a aftermarket sight.

Be careful with other sights especially iron as the slide is aluminum and metals sights could damage."
