Does anyone know of a good pistol vise that can be used to sight in pistols from 38 cal. to 22 cal. I need one that will hold the gun secure while test firing.

For the record there is no such thing! A gun, any gun, cannot be clamped in a fixed mechanical device so it will not move on firing, even a .22.

What you are looking for is a "Ransom Rest" which allows the gun to recoil while clamped in the attached fixture and then return to the same position for subsequent shots. Go to Brownell's and search Ransom Rest, before you are done you will be into it several hundred dollars and still have to provide some sort of immovable base to mount it on! You don't just clamp one of these to a shooting bench if you expect meaningful results.

Thanks, I guess what I need is a sighting rest. I'm not going to put that kind of money in a shooting vise.

The BEST WAY to sight in a pistol is to actually stand and shoot with a two handed hold free hand. The reason I say this is that YOU will not see the sights the same way a Ransom Rest or anybody else does for that mater.

If you sighted it in from a sand bag rest when you shoot it freehand it will print slightly different - at least it does for most shooters.

Rsnsom Rests are occasionally listed on eBay and the gun auction sites. You generally need special fixture blocks for the specific handgun involved. But the rest and the blocks are not cheap. I generally sight in handguns from a sturdy bench over sandbaga using a two-hand hold. But you need to keep any part of the gun off the sandbags.

Remember that once the bullet starts moving, so does the gun. How the gun moves is dependent on a bunch of things, one of which is how it's being held. It moves some before the bullet leaves the barrel. I find that guns are best sighted in the way they will be used. If you're going to carry a Ransom Rest into the woods, then that's a good way to sight one in.
