Out of curiosity, were personal weapons ever allowed on military bases?

I talked to my father about this last nite--he's a WWII combat vet. He said that firearms and ammo were strictly controlled on any stateside base he was on and that a personal firearm would have been a HUGE infraction.

I suspect that may not have been the case in earlier times, but I'm wondering about WWI and later.

Don't know about now, but in the sixties personal weapons were permitted aboard ship if kept in the gun locker.

Signed. No reason to abrogate the rights of our men and women in uniform. The have the same (tragically obvious) need for personal protection- the same as any citizen on the street. If they pass local requirements for CHL they should be allowed to exercise their rights, just like you and me.

As far as it being a WH petition, granted- we know where they stand, and it is not on our side. All the more reason to let them know where WE stand. Standing mute when you have an opportunity to speak is truly a sin of omission. My belief is that if I support the 2A, I have a duty and obligation to support it whenever and wherever possible. If you don't agree, fine. Don't sign. But the tinfoil is apparently wrapped tight on a few of the previous posters.

Finally-
Hard to believe this is a gun board, reading about the potential for road rage shootings if everybody was armed. This nonsense is the same tripe that anti-gunners have been spouting for years about CHL laws, and the statistics have NEVER supported the fears of "wild west shootouts in the streets."

Honestly, I really wonder about some of your guys. Flame away!

If you live on base housing, you can keep them in your home, and follow unloaded transporting laws when bringing them to the range, etc. They are not allowed to other parts of the base besides your home, and you'll generally see "no firearms past this point" signs at a lot of gated checkpoints. When I was living in the barracks as an enlisted marine, we had the option of checking personal firearms into the armory where they would stay unless we checked them out for range shooting (Camp Pendleton, San Mateo area regs). Some of us kept them in our personal vehicles, although this was against regs, vehicles weren't subject to search during routine "health and comfort" inspections, and were only subject to search with a warrant/prob cause from the MP's.

I hear a lot of the regs are at the base commander's discretion, but there is not a general/admiral out there that would "put his career at risk" by allowing service members to keep firearms on their person while on base, even if they obtained a CC permit and carried regularly off base (like me). I guess as a 27 year old, 3x combat veteran, officer, and a well trained armed citizen, I'm not mature enough to carry on base in the eyes of the base commanding officer.

If I understand this correctly, you want us to petition the occupant of the White House to allow us to exercise rights guaranteed to us in our Constitution.

Perhaps someone will explain that I have not properly understood this. I hope.

Before Bill Clinton we could carry on bases, in fact we had Sportsman's Clubs and held shooting events on the weekends and after work. Not so much any more...

LoboGunLeather the military give up many of their Constitutional rights to defend ours. They are under the UCMJ (military law).
