I'm going plinkin' in the morning and bringing a bunch of stuff to shoot up and was wondering what else to bring. So far I have a flat board with some Shoot-N-C stick on targets which is fine but not very dramatic. I also have a bunch of plastic bottles of varying sizes, shaving cream cans, full soda cans (well shaken), a few apples, a box of unopened toothpaste an old flip open cell phone, a box of baking soda and some stationary clay pigeons. This is pretty much stuff that's easy to pick up and take home when done and nothing harmful like paint or glass. We'll be using .357 and .38 spcl from maybe 7 yards and 25 yards. So, what '3-D' items do you like to plink?

When my kids were little, We shot a lot of baloons. They lost interest in shooting paper pretty quick. Baloons kept their interest better.

Have a few old PC's laying around? It's great to take out your frustrations on Bill Gates. Charcoal is great.

Aluminum trash cans are really cheap. Swing by Home Depot on your way over, put it upside down on the range, and then just shred it with ammo.

You've covered many of the most frequently used reactive targets. Try one of the orange, self-sealing spheres sold at major retailers. They roll and/or jump around when hit, their action dependent upon caliber/power/bullet type.

They barely move with a .22LR, move with a 9mm and in my case, was nearly kicked over a high berm with a modest load out of my .458 Win Mag. Need to try it with one of my .500 Mags since this is a S&W forum. Power is fun! Don

When shooting .22lr we like to use spent shotgun shells the challenge being to hit the brass not the plastic and you know by the reaction of the shell

I'd avoid using computers and the like...too much unhealthy stuff getting put into the air, dirt, etc. Just recycle that stuff.

I like to shoot honeydew melons...they blow up nice, and I don't like the taste.

A little twist on that is drilling out a board to the diameter of the hull
placing the empties in and shooting out the primers.

take an old board and put rows of nails in it. Hang clay birds on the nails. You can have all kinds of team competitions to see who can clean their row the fastest. I encourage you to clean up anything not biodegradible.

I used to swing by the store and pick up several bags of fruit that they were going to toss out. Makes for interesting shooting effects - and you don't have to clean up afterwards. Have fun!

Charcoal and clay targets are good, but my favorite is potatoes. It you center them they pretty well blow to shreds, and if you hit the end or side you still have 1 or 2 pieces still big enough for a target. They are generally cheap, and you don't need to pick them up, 100% biodegradable, and you are feeding the bugs and other varmints.

Thanks for the replies! We pretty much wasted the stuff I mentioned above. My favorite was a 158 grain magnum to a raw egg at 7 yards. I called it a field omelette. I ended up shooting my 686-6 and a Model 19-3. Also shot my Winchester Model 12 and a sweet old Win. 30-30. But my favorite were the S&W revolvers of course.

Expensive target. I like honeydews but all to often with today's marketing practice, they rot before becoming ripe. Don

if you live in the woods like I do.....anything is fair-game. Sticks, stumps. pine-cones, lizards, large bugs and spiders, live game like mice and snakes, if you're lucky enough to run across one.
