Plinking Targets

Hi I'm new to the forum but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with those spinning and resetting 22 plinking targets on amazon. They seem pretty cheap. I was wondering how long they hold up.

Well, back on topic, fun with plinkin targets, those spinner targets are great! I have one and as long as you use the recommended caliber, they'll last forever I'd imagine. However, they need to be modified to work properly. Don't try stickin the legs in the ground, doesn't work for long. Take two 2x4's around sixteen'ish inches and drill two holes in them so that the legs fit snug in the holes and don't come out (kinda like the target is wearin snow skis). It'll keep the target upright and in place pretty well. The paint chips off them pretty fast, but you can just add more stickers or just paint them some bright color so they stand out. I love my spinner targets and that little one incher is challenging at distance.

this is similar to the one I shoot.

Other than the spinner, 2lb propane tanks (those little disposables) shot with tracer rounds make nice fireballs from what I've seen on youtube, haha. Which got me wondering how tracers would light up a bit of gas fumes in a plastic soda bottle...although those would take off like rockets, so I'd imagine you'd need to secure them in place.

Sand filled plastic coffee jugs or buckets. Hollow points are fun for makin sodas blow up nice. And of course, lots of beer cans and any other stuff is lyin around.

All of this is done on private property and of course cleaned up every time.....after a thousand rounds or so anyhow...hehehe

I got some 7" AR500 targets from ebay. Hung them from chain on a metal frame and they have been perfect from .22LR to 7.62

Going to order more so I don't have to much to clean up at my shooting area.

I, too, bought several AR400 and AR500 targets of various shapes and sizes from ebay. Hung them on chains from wooden sawhorses so that the target angles slightly toward the shooter. Everything deflects down, but we still use eye protection and stay at least 30 feet away when using pistols and 100 yards when using rifles. I have a fairly remote piece of land that I've been selling fill dirt from which has 25 foot walls. Only down side is ground must be dry or you'll have Georgia red clay everywhere. We leave the sawhorses but remove the steel targets when we leave. HICKOCK45 has a great setup. See it on his UTUBE channel.

I like the prairie dog targets as well. I also like a simple soup can. Making it dance can be a lot of fun.

I once went to the local range and saw a guy with a wooden 2x4 clamped to his target. The 2x4 had small holes which he had drilled every3 or 4 inches. In the holes he inserted DumDum Lollypops and shot them with his .22. Seemed like a good challenge at 25 yrds.

I like that cracker idea! It might just happen to lure in some moving targets too.

I will save up a decent size box, put it on it's side and place bottles in them. Its an easy clean up afterwards plus its tough to beat shooting glass bottles!

If you get ambitious you can spray the inside of the box white, yellow, orange, etc.

That was the exact one I was looking at.

Hope my description of how I made it stable made sense. It's a very fun target to shoot at, and they really spin well......unless your nephew takes aim at it with our 5.56mm AR, then it's a nice clean hole through and only spins once.....damn those bullets are goin fast! It tore through it like a hot knife through butter and only transfered enough energy to the target to spin it around one time, the rest of the energy kept goin as the bullet passed right through it. Dang kids don't listen when I say 22's ONLY FOR THE SPINNER, lol. You can get them for larger calibers too.

I understood your description. That was something i was considering doing with the target anyway. It would be nice to raise it up as well.

One of the features of this sprawling remote range is that each member gets a key to use it anytime, and agrees to follow the range rules on the honor system.

Except for match days, there is no range master present, and each shooter is expected to take care of the range as if it were their own. Membership fees are very low, and all work is volunteer...

I recently joined a similar range but they solved this problem using technology. The "key" to enter the facility is electronic and each has a serial number that records every person entering with a key. They also added video cameras with recorders all over the facility. These camera setups are remarkably inexpensive these days; I helped install a six camera system with night vision capability and if I remember correctly it cost about $400. I suggest your range look into similar measures.

Maybe we should start a different thread just for "range issues and solutions" or something. This thread's supposed to be a fun one, about plinkin targets, not idiots who destroy property. Maybe even include in the posts dates of damage, pics and the range name where it occured.....maybe could solve some of these issues, doubtful, but possible. Cameras and key cards are the way to go, but would add to the cost of membership, however it would be a deterrant. It's like a car alarm, it'll keep the oportunists at bay, not the real thief.

Standard sized ice cubes make great targets for a scope sighted .22. Make them with a regular ice cube tray and put a drop of food coloring in each cube for color. For some reason if you make colored water and try to freeze it, the color washes out. A drop in each cube is much more concentrated and gives good color. After making a batch of cubes in the freezer of my refrigerator, I empty the trays into a plastic grocery bag in a bucket, then put the bucket in my big chest freezer. I keep doing that until the bucket is full. I'll transfer the bag to a cooler when going to the range in warm weather. Colored ice cubes are great targets! They shatter pleasingly with a burst of color. Kids love the red ones because they look like splattering blood when hit. If you don't dead-center an ice cube, there are often smaller pieces left to shoot. The nice thing about ice cubes is that there is nothing to clean up. You simply pack up your shooting gear and the cubes you never sat out to shoot, and go home.

We can't use any kind of food item at our local outdoor range, and with good reason. Even though it is relatively close to town (about 3/4 mile to the closest neighborhood) there are a lot of bears here in Alaska, and ANY food or candy particles will attract bears and ravens.

Here's what we do. Hot glue some paintballs to a piece of cardboard.
They splatter real good when hit with .22's and are easy to detect a hit. We usually time each other and the quickest one to break all the paintballs on his target wins !! We got a great deal on 1000 per box paint balls at a Walmart clearence for $6.00 per box.

Yeah I have a bunch of old golf balls, range balls, dirty creek balls that I always keep when I find while playing. I think I might have to start doing this. What exactly does a .22 do to a golf ball. Can you shoot it multiple times or a one and done?

Depending upon the make, a two pieces golf ball can break apart or just have a hole. Three-piece wound ball are fun, when the cover come apart, then the rubber band windings will start coming apart and the ball bounces around.

A bucket of shag balls, old spray paint, a bag of tees are great fun.

However, golf ball are worst then those pesky plastic bags in breaking down. SO PICK UP the pieces after the fun.

After you master shooting golf balls try acorns, pine cones, and grapes!

Aim small,

TAT

I like shooting steel but can't afford AR500 gongs... So I get cut off's of steel rectangular tube from work and drill 2 holes in one side to hang it from.

I then bent some square steel we had into frames and secure some S hooks. the tube sections hang at a slight down angle because they are hung from the back side. most all fragmentation goes down and even though they deform over time they take a few thousand rounds per side even in as close as 30 yards.

If you have any trailer mfg's or anyone else that goes through a lot of steel tube or I beam see if they will give you scraps.

On cold days when i don't want to pound in my frames i just set them on the ground or in the snow and give a light tap to set them, makes a nice chili popper, they don't always go down in one shot.

pingpong balls.
drill/cut a tiny hole on the top, like 4mm wide.
fill with paint/colouring powder or liquid equivalent (dissolves in nature, type)
put on golf tee.

hit = *POOF!*

instant satisfaction. nice for 70yd and further ranges.

oh i forgot earlier our tradition for christmas morning is to shoot ornaments we purchase on disco the year before.

take down your nice ornaments while the kids clean up the tape and paper shreds then toss the tree in the back of the truck grab the walmart bags you stashed from last year and go. oh wait don't forget your new 15-22!!!

we went to the local junk yard and spent 20 bucks and left with a truck full of targets.. mostly 4x8 square tubing about 8 inches long with couple pieces of chain and a few bolts they dangle from trees at an angle to the ground son any hits get deflected downward.. works great and easy to set up and take down in a few min. anywhere

Thanks for all the great ideas. I have used several of them. My old eyes though need some targets larger than suggested here. Does anybody know if our 15-22 loaded with Mini Mags will knock over a bowling pin. I saw some vague reference that you might have to shoot at the top of them to knock them over. Wondering if a direct hit to the body of the pin would knock them over? Anybody have a guess, or experience? THANKS
