Which would you choose if you had to choose between the two, and why?

this 586 no dash, no box for $799,

or this 686-3 with box for $699?

One thing to keep in mind is that the no dash had a factory modification to the firing pin. If it has been modified it will be marked with an "M" in the yoke area. The reason for the modification was hot 357 loads would flow the primer back into the firing pin frame hole, and bind up the gun.

For me, a four inch barreled L-frame 357 says carry gun, so I'd opt for the 686 and use the $100 "saved" for a nice holster and/or ammo. Not to mention the 586 pictured likely has replacement stocks and front sight, so not worth an extra $100.

So full disclaimer, I bought the 686. I have two shooter grade M stamped 586's including a 4" with the Patridge front sight so the 586 would just be a duplicate although in better shape than mine,
and I've never owned a 686 before

You do realize you are on the wrong forum - this is semi-auto pistols not the revolvers

Huh, guess thats the price we pay for touchscreen phones with small screens. Oh well, if the mods want to move it they can.

Put me in the prefer stainless camp if I have the option. Stainless steel will retain it's finish much better for a shooter gun and much easier to touch up if a scratch occurs. So which one is best for value, I don't know.

You are absolutely right about this and yet I have some kind of irrational gut level preference for the blued guns.

I think I feel this way because my Dad, whom I adored, gave me my first handgun, a Model 28 Highway Patrolman which I carried and shot for ten years and finally gave to my big brother to carry.

I also concur with the other post that the aftermarket front sight and the Hogue grips ruin it for me at that price.

Kind Regards!

I always choose a blued gun over a stainless or nickeled gun with few exceptions. Those exceptions are if the gun is to be often carried or if it will be carried in inclement weather conditions. Then nothing beats a stainless gun. If a gun is just for range use, competition, collection, etc. I always prefer traditional old school blued guns. They are easier to shoot - especially in the sun and I like the looks of them so much better.

Stainless does offer great advantages over blued or Nickel as it can easily and quickly be brought back to pristine condition with nothing more than sandpaper and a few scotchbrite pads of different grits. That said, I would not buy a "dog" in the first place and I do take excellent care of my guns so there is really no need for a refinish.

My only 3 stainless guns are a M60-7, a M63 and a M65. Those were all intended to be carried a lot and I did want the advantages of stainless. All my other revolvers are mostly blued, with a few Nickel plated ones for good measure. One M36 was inherited so no choice there and the other two are a matched pair of Colt SAA's with Stag grips. The rest are all blued guns. My M586 6" was made and purchased in 1983. It is still in excellent shape and shoots very well.

Get em both!

That’s a good deal on the 686….factory grips + box and what appears to be a great condition stainless revolver!

You don’t say if the same seller is offering you these. If so, I’d dicker and get both of them!:D

They are both great revolvers…..figure out which one you like and sell the other here!

You’re welcome! :)

Assuming I couldn’t buy both…Blue 586..I think carbon steel revolvers have a smoother action, and/or can be made smoother than stainless with action work…I don’t like factory S&W grips..I am a shooter, more than a collector, so no need for the box…
