I use Gun Vaults --- get the appropriate size...

Get a large "machine eye", sort of a ring bolt, drill out the hole for the cable lock widget in the vault wall to accept a hefty eye shank, fasten with NyLok nut and double-nut. Use a length of chain, not cable, to lock the vault in the vehicle, passing the chain around the seat frame or etc. It can be defeated, but not very quickly, quietly, or easily, and especially not by thieves unequipped with tools...

Refresh the batteries fastidiously.

Would NOT recommend leaving a Handgun in a vehicle unattended, just carry on your person and have it handy if needed. Don't know your local laws, but here in "The Peoples Republic of NY" it's down-right illegal to do so and if your gun is stolen from a vehicle you automatically loose your pistol permit.

Chief, here it is ok to carry and many do. However, some of us have to go inside courthouses, police stations, Federal buildings and other places that guns are not allowed. A couple yrs ago, I had to go to an out of the area prison to interview a man. I ended up putting my gun in a rental locker at a bus station since the prison would not allow a gun in a car on their property and the guards would not keep it for me.

You are right about not leaving a gun unattended in a car but often, for some, it is required. Too many guns are stolen from vehicles. Yet the odds are a gun temporarily stored in a locked car trunk for a short time being stolen is pretty small.

"V-LINE" makes some compact safes that might work for an auto application. Don't think they make anything specifically for that purpose but they do make a "compact" safe with a mechanical 5 button simplex lock that you can program for your personal combination. I'm leery of battery operated electronic safes though have seen some that look like they are small enough to use in the car. The V-LINE compact model is pre-drilled to accept a cable for securing to frame, seat rack, etc. It's what I use if the need arises, slides under seat to avoid prying eyes. Run about $100 or so. Can't remember the website name but easy to find with Google search. Good luck.

I use a strong plastic box like a Pelican Case. I use 2 locks, keyed alike, and put one end of the cable through one of the locks.
Works great for me. Inexpensive enough to keep one in each vehicle I drive.

Another great case is the Ncase. It is a locking briefcase wih cable. It is advertised as a gun case but also works great for computers and other things. It is the one I use for travel in hotel rooms etc.
