I am thinking about possibly purchasing a Smith and Wesson model 41 target pistol.

I have never seen one (except for pictures on the Internet) and have thus never actually had a chance to see what the grips on this pistol feel like.

In looking at the pictures of the placement of the thumb rests on the grips of the model 41, it looks like they might possibly interfere with the comfortable placement of the trigger finger on the trigger.

Can anyone give me their thoughts as to whether the placement of the thumb rests on the model 41 grips are anything to be concerned about ?

Is it likely or not that I would have to replace the standard grips in order to get a comfortable placement of finger on the trigger ?

Thanks.

There is no problem with the placement of the trigger finger v the thumbrest. I have large hands and the grips fit okay for me.
You will enjoy shooting such a fine piece of work.

I've got small hands and no problems either....you will love this fine pistol.

No problem with the trigger finger. My only gripping problem is that I sometimes unintentionally activate the safety. I tend to grip very high on the frame and that puts the last joint of my right thumb (my shooting hand) in contact with the safety. Sometimes a little upward pressure is enough to put the safety in the "on" position. But, don't let that stop you from getting a .41. Best .22 in the business and one of the best handguns made.

I love the S&W model 41.Right out of the box it is match grade. I am left handed and have no problem with the grip. Don

I took my 9 & 13 year old daughters out Friday to the range. I brought many pistols with us including my new to me 41. They shot "their" guns for the first hour and then tried dad's 41. I didn't get a chance to shoot it again, they were hitting 9 & 10 out of ten at 25 yards on 10" X 12" steel. As fast as I could load the magazines they were unlaoding them. We stopped by the Cabela's in Sydney Ne. on the way home and found another. Now they don't have to fight over who gets it when I'm gone.

I guess I'm in a minority, but a long, long time ago in a land far away, while shooting winter bullseye league I smoothed and thinned the right stock of my mid- 60's M41HB because I didn't like the feel of the ridge. A set of extra stocks were acquired and I can return it to original as required. My two other M41 "plinkers" have the issue stocks, and I can live with them for occasional hunting and range sessions. I wouldn't let the stocks be an issue-two screws and they're fixed.

FWIW, I wear Men's MEDIUM gloves.

Good shooting!

May I revisit this topic for just a minute ?

I am still sort of concerned with the placement of the thumb rests on the model 41 in relation to their alignment with the trigger, particular after reading one of the later replies in this thread.

Hope this is not to stupid a question (but consider that I have never had a pistol that has any type of thumb rest grips) But if I am a left-handed shooter and when I wrap my left hand around the grip, does my trigger/index finger suppose to go above the thumb rest or below the thumb rest ?

I am correct that these grips are ambidextrous, correct and that the thumb rests are in the same position on both sides of the grips ?

By looking at the pictures of the grips on these guns and considering that when I place my finger on the trigger of a gun, I want the last joint of my left index finger to come to rest fairly low (downward) on the trigger, the thumb rest appears to be in exactly the wrong position for my finger to come to rest at the correct position on the trigger.

If my trigger finger is supposed to go above the thumb rest, then it seems I would have to crook my finger downward over this thumb rest to reach the bottom part of the trigger shoe.

If my trigger finger is supposed to go below the thumb rest, then it seems I would have to crook my finger upward from under the thumb rest to reach bottom part of the trigger shoe.

Also, the positioning of the safety release concerns me just a bit. Is the safety button on this gun reversible, i.e. can it be move to the right hand side of the gun to accommodate a left handed shooter ?

And I assume if the grip were to be a problem that I could find a good pair of replacement grips that did not have any thumb rest at all for a S&W model 41 ?

Thanks.
