I decided to start playing around with reloading for the heck of it. I have a M&P 2.0 9mm. I picked up some power pistol and sport pistol and have Acme 147gr fp NLG coated bullets and mixed range brass. I have seen so many load numbers I cannot keep them straight. Let me know if the below is a good starting point or if you have any better advice.

Power pistol
4.5gr
OAL 1.145

Sport Pistol
3.5gr
OAL 1.1

When you start shoving a Big 147 gr bullet into the little 9mm case................
one needs to understand where the base of the bullet is located, in the tapered case design.

Lots of data out there and most companies take into account the case volume and the type of powders used but you still need to be careful when getting into full loads and deep seating these bullets.

A Bullet's base and Ogive have a lot to do with the OAL that can be used for safe loads with certain powders.
I have used both the Speer and Berry 147 gr bullets but with their different style, it is night & Day on what powders will work and the fps and pressers that you will receive.
I am lucky to have a chrony, to try to keep on the safe side, when loading this weight bullet.

Use the manuals data and stay safe.
These bullets can offer very good accuracy with the right powders.

these are just "My spec's" not the manuals.

I load 147grain berries over 4.1 grains of Power pistol with OAL of 1.166" for a velocity of ~870 fps. Probably loaded/used 20k of them this way. Load works great in a Smith 929, a Springfield Armory 9mm 1911, and a CZ Shadow Target on steel.

O.P.: "I decided to start playing around with reloading for the heck of it."

This is a pretty scary statement!

Beginning/learning reloading and starting with a "heavy" bullet in a small case can lead to dangerous pressure issues if you don't understand powder burn rates/COL/velocity and pressure spikes!

Stick with published data. Small changes can create over pressure and KABOOMS

Set the 147's aside and begin your journey learning with the lighter bullets until you fully understand the variables in all things reloading!

Smiles,

PP is for max loads imo. If you want target loads, ASP is a better choice.
3.1gr under a 147gr RN coated gives me about 870fps in a g19. A lot lest bladt & clean burning.

As a note;
my shortest barrel with the 147gr bullets was a 3.5" C9 and
I could get from 807 fps to 975 fps with the Speer #4006 bullet
that would feed and eject without any problems.

With your shorter 3" barrel, you will need to make sure the starting loads will work the slide and that the bullet will......
clear the barrel !!

If brand new and not broken in yet..........
you need a medium load to work the slide with the new spring and rough metal parts, until they smooth out a little.

A new M&P 9 shield 3.1" had stovepipes with a 135gr Xtreme that had a Power Factor of 118...........
that worked in my broke in 3.5 & 5" pistols.

Enjoy the new pistol.
