I recently acquired a 1952 Combat Masterpiece that's a little bit different and wanted to draw upon the collective brain trust to shed some light on this one.
First of all, it has a factory installed lanyard loop. The serial number on the butt was obviously marked to accomodate the loop.
Next, on the lower part of the frame under the left hand grip panel, are the letters R-S and the numbers 10 and 80 under the original blue. I've seen factory lanyard loops before, but never any additional markings on the frame other than assembly numbers. Any clues as to who this gun was made for?
Thank you in advance!

Looks like "R-B" to me, which indicates a factory re-blueing. The 10-80 (or perhaps 10-86?) would be the date S&W worked on it.
Sorry about the sub par photos - the second letter is definitely an S in person. That second number looks more like a deformed 0 under magnification, but it could be a 6. Thank you.

The re-finish mark can be either R-B or R-S, they mean the same to S&W. Re-finish blue or re-finish standard, which is blue! So it makes no difference how you read it, either means the same thing! The only other possibility is R-N, refinish Nickel, and this gun obviously is not Nickel plated.
