It had to happen sooner or later... I recently got in to wheel guns, and have been severely bitten by the S&W collecting bug. I ignored the itch as long as I could, but finally had to scratch it.

I stopped by one of my not so local pawn shops today and managed to leave with a 5-screw Pre-Model 10 dated around 1948-1951. It is all original with 100% matching numbers, including the stocks. The bluing is in good original condition with some light wear at the muzzle. The only damage I could find is a ding and some scrapes on the top strap from being dropped at some point in its life.

It did not come with box or papers, so I consider it good shooting grade rather than safe queen grade.

So, why would someone start collecting by buying one of the most popular S&W models ever made? Easy... there are many to choose from; you can get into them for a reasonable price; there is a lot of variation to build a collection on; the inevitable mistakes are a lot less expensive than on other models; and k-frames are the perfect size for me.

I consider this the first of my collection even though I already have a 4 inch 66-1. The 66-1 is a brilliant shooter, but too new for me to consider collectible.

My questions to you:

1. Is there a cure for this disease?
2. If the answer to 1 is no, how many guns is enough?

First off - Welcome aboard, you will learn a lot here. Very nice find for your first S&W revolver. There is no going back.

Now to answer your questions:

1. NO

2. That answer is still unknown.

Wow! A 6" pre-10. That's something I personally don't see every day. That is a great way to start out. Possibly we will see other 6" post war guns now that you started this.

The actions on the old guns are very addictive. Nice 6" there sir.

Great score!

Nice gun!

There is no cure and your second question does not make sense.

jr, first, you need the 2" rd and sq butt, the 4" & 5" with the C prefix, then all the above with the S prefix in long action and short action, then repeat the whole collection in nickel. that will be a good start. then start looking for the 2, 4 & 5" .32 M&Ps. lee

Welcome, and bless you, good sir, for giving a poor, homeless orphan a fresh start in life! Your kindness will be rewarded in heaven.

By the way, the bug has bitten you, so you're hosed.

welcome to S&W. glad you are here.

the S&W pre model 10 is an excellent addition to the collection you have started.

My questions to you:

1. Is there a cure for this disease? the "illness" INCREASES in strength as time goes by.

2. If the answer to 1 is no, how many guns is enough? as many as there are stars in the sky...

Welcome to the Forum.
In answer to your question, yes there is a cure. It comes at your funeral.
You are now a member of the Forum. If you haven't figgered it out, we're just a big 'ol bunch of enablers.

Congratulations on your purchase of the M&P. It looks like a nice one. There is a rule in collecting S&W revolvers. You have to have at least one M&P, or we won't show you the secret handshake.;)

Question 1. WHY cure the disease? Only a miniscule percentage of the population seems to suffer from it.
Question 2. You are pondering the infinite, a life long passage.

:~)

Sadly, the questions don't really matter anymore. It's to late, you done got snakebit. Looking forward to the pics of your next one. I'm sure it won't be long.

Thanks for the welcome and the 'assistance' with my affliction. You guys are a bunch of enablers, aren't you. :)

So, let me see if I've got this right:

1. The disease is incurable. Symptoms may be reduced by the condition of abject poverty, but this is only temporary.

2. I need to take out a second mortgage, sign the kids into indentured servitude, and live on a diet of rice and beans so I can amass every possible variant of the M&P ever produced.

Hmmm... sounds just like my motorcycle days 20 years ago.

When you get the answers to these questions please let me know.

Congrats on your nice M&P! Yes you get to keep it!

See, that's how it ALWAYS starts. You THINK you are only into M&P's. HAHAHA, just wait...................

If you truly want to collect M&Ps (or more generally, K-frame Smiths) it's likely you will never come close to obtaining all of the different calibers, sights, types, finishes, barrel lengths, and grip styles they were made in over the past 100+ years - and more than a few are very unusual and rare. So from that standpoint, collecting M&Ps is challenging. Incidentally, yours is from sometime in the early 1950s, probably 1950.

My wife always say's the last one that followed me home is enough. I always tell her the same thing and I have found it to be true, its not my fault they keep showing up.

They breed in the safe if left unhandled for too long. Just last week between one of my mod-19's and pre-10 a combat masterpiece showed up. Sure is a cute little guy and I cant just turn it out in the cold, I just need to buy another safe so I can spread them out a bit. After about a half hour of that she just walks off saying things like "my mother was right" and the like.

So good luck with that, you now have at least two and you are officially toast. Once you get bit you will always find a reason to buy just one more. Most of the time I don't even look they just find me and that's the end of it.

just wait, no one has mentioned the different strains of the virus....the j frame, or n frame hasn't gotten to you yet. then there is the long barrel, snub nosed, stainless, blued and nickled strains, penciled barrel, heavy barrel, let alone the caliber strain ! My view is enjoy it and fondle the result often
