Looking for your opinions as to reasonable price. Ballpark range.

629-3. Classic DX with a 5 inch barrel. Not a safe queen but not abused either.

No box, papers, tools, or extra parts.

Has red ramp front sight and factory Hogue grips.

Well, the value is subjective. Original grips( 2 sets) or did it come with one set of rubber?
Box, test target, interchangeable front sights?

Quantity made?

I cannot speak to the 629's, but the 29-5 classic DX 5" had a whole package with it, and they were made for 1 year, and less than 200 were made. Pretty scarce.

Also you location may enter into the value

That's a tough one. I wouldn't be surprised by much these days, in terms of S&W prices, but I'd guess that's going to be a $1000-$1500 gun, depending on exact condition and location - possibly a bit more.

I bought one used last year for $900. Sold it this year to fund another purchase for $1200. So I would say somewhere within that range.

As I recall, the DX came with 2 sets of grips and about 5 front sight replacements. When I got my Classic 5", the dealer had a couple DX's but I wasn't thinking long term and passed due to the price. As we know, hindsight is 20/20.

Yes, the DX originally came with two sets of grips, 5 front sight inserts and target. It was only made in the 5" version in 1992. No idea on production numbers. I asked S&W and they referred the question to another entity who couldn't answer it either. I doubt it was many.

I usually try to gauge by recent completed auctions but not too many ever come up for sale.

The 5" 29 Classic and 5" 629 Classic pre lock models do tend to bring a premium over the 6.5" and 8 3/8" versions.

DX versions in 5" are even more so desired and were only made for one year so they are uncommon.

To answer the OP I would state that much of the increased value of the DX lies in its accessory pack. Original box, test target, morado combat grips ($300 alone), five front sights. The -3 would have also came with the silver medallion Hogue grips which themselves are becoming hard to find and going up in price.

Without the original box and accessories I would only value a 629-3 5" Classic DX a couple hundred dollars over a similar condition non DX 5" Classic.

Very good condition 629-3 to 629-5 5" classic models tend to go around $800-1000 without the original box.

IMO $1200 would be fair for the revolver in question.
