I saw a pristine 586-3 (4 inch-maybe unfired) with original wooden grips, box and papers for sale at a local gun shop for $850.00. Is the price fair?

If unfired and with all original box, papers, etc. I'm thinking $850 would be at the top end. I'd try to talk them down a bit. A range of $700 to $750 would be more reasonable. Just my 2 cents, of course.

If I found a gun that I wanted in unfired shape that I probably might not find again as long as its not way off base I would not hesitate to pay the asking price if the seller would not go any lower.

Agreed. If being NIB isn't important to you, wait until you find a shooter with no box, which will run about $550 - $650. Anyone who wants one NIB won't haggle to much about that price, since they're just about all gone.

The 586-3 is the most desirable iteration of the entire line. It succeeds the issues with the "M" stamp correction and precedes the "drill & tap" for scope mounting or the MIM hammer introduction. It has the improved yoke retention design.

I purchased my 586-3 for $500, but it had areas of speckled rusting on the frame and cylinder. I sent it to S&W for a refinish as well as a master revolver action job for about $450. The trigger is as good as it can get. I'm a shooter who collects nice looking guns.

Me Too! Yours looks AWESOME! I have a 4" no dash from 1983, and a 6", 686, from 1989. Bob

The 586 is a very desirable revolver, pre-lock, box, papers and excellent condition could fetch $850 from the right buyer. That is a very nice looking example, Blackbarry.

Does anyone know if these are Cocobolo stocks? They're beautiful. Sorry to hi-jack the thread.
