price on remington police issue

info i gathered so far in very good condition supposedly police issue . has 5 shot tube will take 3" shells . pistol grips all black furniture and the seller will throw in like new wood stock and fore end . ( which i probably do not need ) gun possibly police issue from the 80's .
price ... asking $350

is there marks to look for to verify if it is really police issue ?
most important is the asking price in line ? ( might be able to offer $300 for it and get it bought )

Well it comes down to Age and condition. Lets say condition is good. Then next is what police Dept does it come from. If its a small dept with no markings then your close to being topped out in the price at 400. Also depends if theres a factory folding stock with it. (very desirble) . I just picked up a CHP 870 with a factory folder and orginal furniture with rack number of 253 date of 1966. Some depts didnt mark them. Post a pic

Is it a plain Remington issued to police or the Remington Police model marked "Police Magnum". If it is a Police Magnum it is possibly worth $350; if it is a plain 870 it is in my opinion not worth the price regardless of condition.

Many different 870's were and are 'Police Issue', and without a specific marking or maybe some paperwork, it can be difficult to know for sure, although frankly, for a using gun, it would not matter to me since most LE shotguns are shot very seldom. In years past, all 870 police models were really just short barreled Wingmasters with no markings to differentiate them as different to the rest (except that once in a while they would do a run of factory parkerized guns, but still no difference in markings). They also came with walnut stocks and fore ends.

Current Police Models are so-marked and still come with dull finished walnut stocks if wood is desired. New they command a premium price but are really nice work guns. The various 'Express' models, except for the very early ones, are also marked and do not have the finish work or heavier springs and milled extractors of the Wingmaster or Police Models. They will come with 'box crate' wood rather than walnut. It is prone to dry out and split riding in patrol cars, so many may have aftermarket polymer stock replacements. Finish on standard Express Models will usually be a dull bluing that may appear to be, but is definitely NOT, parkerizing.

For a nice used current marked Police Model with walnut wood, I would pay $300-350. An older Wingmaster that could use a reinish, not so much, and an Express...never. JMO

the party that has the gun sent me pics ...... looked really good shape but not in real fine detail on the pics.
i will possibly examine the gun in the next few days and that will tell me more.
question can this gun have an extension mag tube added for more shell capacity , and how hard is the fix ?
where is the best place to obtain the needed parts ?

there is i believe , no one else looking at the gun at the present time , so that is why i think it may be had for 3 bills or under .

That's a little high. A local gun shop was selling 870 Police Magnums in excellent condition with synthetic speed feed stocks for $250.00. I got one that is stamped, I believe, "Washtenaw County Sheriff's Dept". I got another PD issue "Remington Magnum" with no markings. Both parkerized with speed feed stocks and 18" bbls. They're probably charging you for the the walnut stocks. Ask them how much without the wood.....I'm trying to find wood stocks to replace my synthetic stocks...I have a fore stock. Just need the butt stock.

There is a dealer down here that takes in about 500 police turn in's a year. And in various stages and conditions. The first one was a 870 wingmaster with 18.5" cyl bbl and magazine extension. And covered in rust. Wood needed to be redone. Some 4/0 steel wool and clp and about 4 hours time and all the rust was gone. Couple pits but that was about it. Cleaned the mag extension and redid the forend and buttstock. That one I paid $225 otd. Second one was another 870 20" cyl bbl no mag extension and of course the rust. had that one cleaned upbefore I went to bed that night. Stock and forend will get the same treatment as the previous one. That one cost me w/taxes $212 otd. They are out there if you look for them. A little of your time and effort and you have a good reliable shotgun. Frank

Bought a 870 Wingmaster last week with a 28" barrel. After paying my local gunsmith the princely sum of $20 to cut the barrel to 18.5", I now have a nice defense shotty with some pretty nice wood furniture with a ringed forearm. Four shot tube, but really, would I need more? BTW, that twenty bucks to cut the barrel involved WAY more than a hacksaw. He turned it down in a lathe, deburred it on a sander, filed it, then put a nice bevel at the end, just like factory. Then he drilled and tapped it and put in the factory brass bead sight. Nice to have a gunsmith who is also a FRIEND. I've got 270.00 in the gun total, counting the cut barrel. Can't go wrong with a Remington, but I was REALLY wanting an Ithaca Model 37 Featherweight, since I'm a lefty, but this deal was too good to pass.
