It looks like these are being sold in some places at pretty deeply discounted prices, even compared to the 9mm 2.0 in the same configuration.

Is it just due to general declining popularity of the 40S&W, or are there problems with the M&P in that caliber?

I haven't heard of any issue with the M&P in 40 cal. Although I'm probably not as in the know as some. I think it's the popularity of the 40 cal. I see price differences between the 9mm & 40 cal in other brands as well.

Just the caliber thing. The bottom has really dropped out of the 40 market.

That's what I've heard, but I thought it was having a more profound effect on used pistols being traded in. I get the argument that 9mm ammo is cheaper and better than it used to be, but it's not like 40 ammo has gotten worse. I still like it and will probably pick up an M&P 40 to go with my 9.

I've seen the .40 Compact 2.0 for as low as $324. But the Shield 40 2.0 is still closer to the $400 range?

I can only assume that the 40 Shield is selling well and there is demand for that pistol???

It all boils down to money, IMHO. .40 cal. ammo is just too expensive, compared to 9mm. People just aren't willing to pay the extra cash, for not much benefit, if at all!

I went with Shield 9mm, more capacity, cheaper ammo, less recoil. I'm not opposed to the .40 or .45. My feeling is if your not gonna stop someone with a 9mm, your probably not going to stop them with a .40 or .45 either and need to spend more time practicing.

I was a hardcore 40 guy for a long time. I still own several, including a Shield and 40C, and some other full size ones. The wife got into shooting a couple of years ago, and settled on the 9. So I was loading both. 40 is only slightly more expensive to reload.

Decided I wanted a range only gun, and figured I'd try a 9mm. Since then, I've become a convert. I shoot quite a bit, at least 2 days a week at an indoor range. My accuracy improved and it's just so much more fun/less punishing shooting a shell with less recoil. I now own a few 9's, and the 40's are all gathering dust. I'll bust one out and take it to the range every now and then, but it never makes me think "I should shoot my 40's more".

That's just my story, and I know it does not apply the same to everyone. But given the state of the 40 market, I don't think it's an uncommon story, either.
