Primer detonated when seated

I've had this had this happen to me on my 650, it's an ear-ringer for sure. My problem was a result of my being rather "green" and "strong-armed" on the primers. My fault.

Glad you were ok. I'm guessing you may have hit one a bit hard that was not aligned properly...that's what I did.

These days I have acquired a "feel" for the press that I did not have in during the first few hundred. I now go at a speed where I can "feel" a cocked primer and will ease off before detonation.

More testimony for always wearing quality eye protection when reloading or bullet casting.

I had one pop while loading .223 military brass. I figure I didn't remove enough of the primer crimp.I was using the RCBS hand primer and sitting on the couch, the poor cat (Simon) nearly hit the ceiling. Didn't see him until dinner time.

What FrankD45 said.

I've never detonated a primer, but I've spotted the aggravating tiny dent in the newly seated primers, and so watch the primer seating punch (#13967 on my RL550B, page 5)and keep it swept clean.

I keep an old 1" paint brush next to my Dillon 550 for just this reason. De-capping debris accumulating around the primer seating ram. Stop every 50 or so rounds and take a swipe with the brush and it's all cleaned up again.

I use a can of compressed air to clean the primer area (and other press areas). Works great.

Here is a pic of the casing that detonated during primer seating.
