A friend bought a 5906 that jams. It appears it tries to feed a new round before the empty round is ejected. It does this when fired, or when the action is worked by hand. He has three magazines, and the gun does this with all the mags. Anybody have an idea what could cause this? Thanks.

I would check the extractor and make sure it is holding on to the empty case as it clears the magazine. To check, chamber an empty case and then have one loaded round in the magazine. Pull the slide back slowly and see if the extractor holds on to the case as it passes over the loaded round. Also check to be sure the ejector tip is not broken off. It should protrude through the breach face when the slide is retracted. If those two areas are not the source of the problem at least they can be eliminated. Bruce

Yes I just experienced this on a 5906 I bought in March, fired about 200 rounds of blazer brass through it so I felt confident with it. I then went to a 3 gun match and the first round I fired the Hook part on the extractor sheared off clean. It cost me $30 parts and labor to get if fixed locally versus a couple of weeks and who knows how much to send it to Smith since I was not the original owner. Smith and Brownells will not sell you the part and Numrich is out of stock on the part. Find the best gunsmith in your area and see if they will fix it.

Or check with Smith and see if they will repair it under warranty. They will generally pop for shipping if you ask.
