When firing or dry firing it double action it sometimes locks up 1/2 way through the trigger pull.
When I release the trigger it cycles ok for several pulls.
The action is clean and looks tight with everything in place.
Please advise what you think the problem could be.
Thanks much.

Bent ejector rod most likely. It is probably hanging up on the same chamber or chambers each time. Open the cylinder, and look at the end of the ejector rod while spending the cylinder. If you see a noticeable wobble, your ejector rod is bent. Cheap repair. $10 from S&W or you can straighten the one you have. There is a You tube video on how to repair or replace it.

Is the gun mostly unfired? A new extractor star with a burr on it could be the cause, but should smooth out with use. I had a 686 with the same problem. A little judicious stoning on the extractor took care of it. It was only happening on one ratchet.
