I thought I had bought a quality set, until the head broke and boogered up my Colt.

I have that set, they are HIGH quality tools.

Any time you put a screwdriver to anything you have the risk of screwing it up. I hate to say it, but, ussually a broken bit is OPERATOR ERROR. Either overtightening or wrong bit. If the bit fit the slot correctly, the WHOLE end would've sheared, not just one corner.

I checked the bit before starting to make sure I had a proper fit, then loosened the screw... There was no tightening envolved in this operation.

I have had the same experience with the Chapman Screwdriver set, about three bits have broken. I would not say that it was operator error, simply a POS bit provided by Chapman. Thought that I had bought something nice........I would never use/buy them again!

Sad to say, but TRUE: Even the former name-brand quality handtools have gone to "Made In China" with the attendant spotty quality control found in chinese products.

I've had exactly the same experience with Pachmayr gunsmith screw drivers. The torx tip drivers allow the tip to twist waayyyy too easy. The straight blades like the one in your picture sheared off and one marked my gun up. That was while removing a screw, and it's hard to use the wrong driver with their set, they're all labeled what they're for!

I use the little black handle that Chapman makes and buy my tips from the hardware store and put in it for my gun screw drivers. I have own three different brands and broke the tips, plus to work on S&W revolvers you only need two sizes of screwdrivers.

Hmm, I've had two bits from my identical chapman set break, that were CORRECTLY used. Going to Brownells Mag-na-tip now.

The Chapman set I bought was so bad they went in the garbage long ago. Bits broke with no effort at all.

Have broken tips from many manufacturers over the years. Would rather break a tip than break off the screw head.

When I break a tip that was the proper one, I tend to look at other solutions--like heat/viberation, or both on the screw before trying to loosen it again. Never broke two on the same screw.

I always keep spares for the most used bits and screwdrivers. Two of the very thin Chapman, and a couple of my Brownell ones do break at times.

Last, I have never damaged a gun when a bit broke. If you do, you have waaayy toooo much force on the screwdriver.
