Some of you know that I was divorced a year ago in July. One of the things my controlling "X" did was the cooking of forbidden foods in the house. Steak-Umm's being one of them. Over the course of the year my son and I have enjoyed most if not all of the "forbidden" foods with the exception of the Steak-Umm's.

In July we made a trip to Maine to visit SebagoSon and stopped off in Philly to see the sites. We checked out Geno's and Pat's to sample the true Philly Cheese Steak. (Ed and I both preferred Pat's).

Here's Ed taking out the Pat's Steak in the car before I could even get back to the hotel.

The top photo is my attemp tonight of making a Philly Cheese Steak.
Yes, it's Steak-Umm's. But nice fresh bread, Cheese Whiz and grilled onions. They were great!!!

Here's Ed taking out the Caledon Ranch Virginia version of the Philly Cheese Steak.

For protection is the Model 58, 29, 38/44 hybred. Yup an early Model 58 frame with a Model 29 cylinder and a 38/44 barrel reamed to 44 caliber.

Picked it up in Maine during vacation(Thanks Drew). Shoots nice with Georgia Arms 44 Special Cowboy loads. But I have touched off some 44 Magnums and though stout very accurate.

Yes I need to get some decent grips for the gun! I like short tops. So thinking about getting a set of the S&W Heritage replacements.

All in all a great weekend with my son full of shooting, camping out under the stars and eating much heart stopping food.

Ahhhhhhh yes! Philly Cheese Steaks! One of life's greatest/simple pleasures. (now and forever forbidden by a cruel cardiologist)

I like the upper picture of Ed with the remains of his Pat's Cheese Steak. Should be captioned: "You touch this Dad and I'm going to have to hurt you."

Thanks for sharing, Bruce.

Thanks guys. He's a great kid. We're active in Cub Scouts, shooting, fishing, bike riding, anything just plain fun. George I do believe I would have lost a finger or two if I had reached for that sandwich!

Kenny here's a link for you. Va Diner. Home of the famous Peanut Pie and ham biscuits.

About an hour and a half from me.

Close to Colonial Williamsburg if any forum members are ever down that way.

Mike Stern's site Road Food did a review on it as well.

Virginia Diner - Wakefield, VA

Onomea I cannot keep this kid supplied in SPAM!! He loves it fried, out the can, you name it. Even in spaghetti sauce. I've created a monster.

Biggest surprise is know one hit me up about the 44 Magnum Heavy Duty.

We've got to do it again, Bruce. Great looking kid!

But giving the devil her due, Sandy's marinara sauce doesn't suck. Jus' sayin. :)

Yeah but Jim that recipe came from her family in Sicily. Beside's her Mom always said I cooked better than her. Tell me that's not an insult.

I still harbor than man hate for her big time.

Your right we need to do another get together. Haven't hit any Richmond haunts in quite a while. The rib place still there?

Ed's A Fine Young Man....

Thanks guys. He's a great kid.

That's a fact right there.....

As good as they grow 'em..... a real tribute to the time, commitment and dedication of his Dad...

I've known his since just after he was born and was so worried that Ed would take the divorce badly, but man, he has really flourished....

Bruce, you should take alot of pride and satisfaction in your parenting.... ain't easy doing it alone, or worse with the resistance from C.Z. .... I know first hand how tough being a single parent can be, but you make it look easy and have truly overcome....

What a difference a year makes...

You two are free to be who you are and what you want to be....

Well done.

Drew

PS: Oh, yeah, uh, nice gun.....

My best to you and your son in what may be tough times; together you can build a new and hopefully "better" life. Sharing food is one of the best ways to connect and communicate with the people you love! That said, here is a cautionary tale concerning Philly Cheese-Steak Sandwiches...

For the past 16 years on Saturday I have been making a free lunch for the skels that frequent the tiny "dive" bar which I tend. About 6 years ago the featured entree was Philly Cheese-Steak Sandwiches. YES they consisted of "Steak-Ums", "Cheeze- Whiz" and grilled onions (with optional sweet peppers) on a chewy, fresh "sub" bun. In spite of warnings to the contrary "Big-Bob" insisted on eating TWO!

Sadly, his kin found him the following Monday in bed and TOTALLY DECEASED!!! He died of a massive coronary sometime in his sleep during the weekend. I was not held responsible (his peeps told me that he looked peacefull and satisfied) but I have never had the gumption to duplicate the dish.

That's a shame Va Diner has slipped. I haven't been there in years.

Yeah I did an extra 30 min's on the treadmill Monday to help unblock the arteries. I can see where a steady diet of those things could kill you.
