Protruding firing pin on new 9mm Shield (1.0)

Hi, All.

I just bought a new 9mm Shield 1.0 (SKU: 180021). I have not yet cleaned or fired it.

The firing pin protrudes from the breech face during disassembly. During normal cycling and dry firing, the firing pin does not protrude. When I field strip the pistol, the firing pin protrudes from the breech face while it is separated from the frame. When I reassemble, the firing pin protrudes during the first closure of the action (i.e. when slide is locked back to reset the takedown lever, the firing pin is protruding from the breech face).

When I retract the slide after the first closure, the firing pin no longer protrudes.

When the slide is separated from the frame, I can manually retract the striker, and it stays in that position. If I do this, the firing pin does not protrude during that first closure.

I am unsure if this is a defect, or if it is a peculiarity of the Shield. When my XD or Glock slide is removed, the pin does not protrude.

Is my Shield defective, or is this normal?

Thanks for your help.

No firing pin protrusion on my .40 Shield 1.0.

Thanks for the info.

I just realized that the firing pin protrudes during part of the slide cycle after dry firing as well.

If I dry fire the pistol, the firing pin remains protruding from the slide as the slide is manually cycled back. It continues protruding during slide closure, until just before completely closing. When the action is almost completely closed, the pin retracts. It protrudes for the entire opening cycle and well over half of the closing cycle.

This doesn't seem normal, but I'd appreciate anyone else who can advise on that before I go through the hassle of sending a brand new gun back to S&W.

Shield 1.0 owner. The striker should not protrude. See page 14 of the owners manual. Good luck.
