I just received an email from S-W asking about the availability to purchase a new center ported slide for my full size M+P pro.

Reply shocked me. It stated that S-W was no longer selling slides or barrels. They are now considered restricted parts.

Is this something new?

The only way I can read this is they did, but no longer do. Doesn't this sound like a change to you? Whether "new" or not depends on your interpretation of "new" I would guess.

Since barrels and slides must be properly fit to each other, they are not drop-in parts, there is very good reason why they would be considered as restricted!

I explained to them that I wanted to purchase a slide and then fit an Apex sdi barrel.

Given strong gun sales, S&W is likely using all the slides and barrels they can make in new guns. Their production is limited more by these parts than the easier and faster to make poly frames or the trigger groups.

This has been normal for a few years. It's possible to buy parts (including slides and barrels) from distributors like Midway, Brownell, G&R Tactical, what S&W did was stop selling directly to the public. This is normal for a number of manufacturers. The availability of parts has been spotty due to demand, but if you put your name on a "notify me" list, you will eventually get your part. I think it sucks, but it's their decision, I can always change brands if I think I'd be better off elsewhere.
