Question about M&P15

Hey guys im new to the tactical rifle scene,as of now I do not own one but I have been looking at buying a M&P15.Am I reading correctly that they are gas operated,kind of like a 50cal Desert Eagle?

Smith and Wesson makes the M&P 15 in Direct Impingement aka Gas Tube Operated and Gas Piston Operated systems.
Not exactly the same way a pistol works.

I REALLY like my M&P15 MOE (it was an anniversary gift from my wife this year), and they're pretty nice assembly line rifles, but I think the M&P-15's are over-priced (unless you can get them on sale at severely reduced prices). You can buy equal/better rifles for less - all you have to do is use google or visit one of the many AR-15 oriented forums. I recently scratch-built a better rifle for less than my MOE cost.

(Better means a mid-length stainless barrel, full-auto BCG, floating handguard, custom trigger, more comfortable furniture.)

I think I understand now,the AR's uses the charge from the round to cycle the load?

I think you are correct. The DE .50 cal does use a gas operated design. I think it's a little different than the what is at use in an AR. Not many other pistols (if any at all) have a gas design.

I just pruchased an MP-15A and have been learning a lot watch different videos on youtube. I think I should have bought the OR version, but whatever. It's my first assult rifle. I usually stick to glocks and such.
