I have had my M&P 15 Sport for about a week. I noticed right off when I picked it up from the gun shop that there was a white film on the finish, which is easily wiped off.

When I got it home I thoroughly cleaned it and gave the finish a light coating of oil, then wiped it clean. Yet each morning, I notice this white film returning. What is this? Is it normal? Thanks.

White film? On what part of the rifle do you notice the white film? Upper, lower, barrel? What solvent/cleaner are you using to clean the exterior surface of your rifle? What oil are you using to rub down the exterior of your rifle?

A few extra details would help.

I am using Pro Shot 1 Step Gun Cleaner to clean, and Pro Shot Bio4X Lube and preservative to lube and protect. It's what I had on hand.

Huh, never noticed this before, it says it's made from US grown crop based vegetable oils. I don't know what to say about that.

Mostly noticing it on the lower. It's entirely possible that I would benefit from an upgrade in my choice of gun oil.

Didn't find any mention of a white film when using the Pro Shot products. Where and how do you store your rifle?
In any case, I've always used Sentry Solutions products since I was in the Army way, way back.

I'm just going to try some different oil. Maybe CLP, seems to be well liked.

Had this same issue with my M&P 15 Sport. I had tried using BreakFree on it and it seemed to work but was back the next day. Actually sent it back to S&W as poor quality finish. They returned in about a week and all the paper work said was they cleaned it. It has not returned and that was about 10 months ago. All I can think of is possibly powder residue from being test fired at factory. It was on both upper and lower receivers.

I thought it might be something like that. I got some different cleaner and oil, as well as a silicone cloth. I'll just keep cleaning it and sound like it will stop at some point. There was much less white powder today.

I ended up using non-acetone nail polish remover to completely strip all oil off the upper and lower, and re-coated it with some Hoppes 9 oil. It is hoped this will resolve my white powder issue.

Remington makes Rem action cleaner and it removes all the oil and drys to a clean surface. I use it after the range to remove all the old oil with all the build up in it. This might work if you get those white spots again. I got something like that on my Remington 870 shotgun when I took off my side saddle the metal had a white film on it so I used the Rem action Cleaner and Rem wipes, took it right off.

A can of brake cleaner spray.

Cut all the stuff off, and it will leave everything bone dry and at that point you won't have any issues.

The finish on these guns attracts everything. wiping them with a rag and their cover in lint. I got into the habbit of using china brisel brush to dust it off, works pretty good removes most marks. Even your finger nails will leave marks while pushing and pulling the pins out. I deal with this finish at work being a CNC machinist, its bead blasted and anodized to look matt black.

The frog lube seems to have resolved my issue. And my rifle smells minty fresh.
