Hi, all -

I have a 27-2 that I bought used. It came with a presentation case that I assumed was factory. The lining inside looks legit, at least. But...I just realized that there is no marking on the box whatsoever. No S&W logo, or brand, or anything.

Does anyone know if some of the presentation cases from this era came like that?

Thanks.

Mike - there are no formal markings on what sounds like a proper case for your gun.
Pull the blue flocked panels out - I'd guess there is some hand written numbers scribbled inside.

It's possible that your gun didn't come with a presentation case, depending on what year your gun is. I believe that the presentation case wasn't standard with 27-2" until about 1976 or so. It could have been ordered as an accessory, though I'm not certain that they had the correct shaped inserts before 1976. Maybe Doc44 will see this and comment.

None of the wooden presentation cases came with any markings that I know of (other than possibly the first wooden cases with the clamshell inserts.) Even the pics of those I have seen didn't have any markings on them that readily showed.

The early blue/black cases that shipped with the first .44 magnums had writing on the bottom in white grease pencil, but I have never seen any marks on a wooden case.

The new repro cases have the logo on them, but they aren't the same case either.

Thanks for the replies, guys. In the box, there's a receipt from 1977 from Montgomery Ward's, so I'll assume the vintage is about right for having a case. I'm going to assume this is original.

Ah, Montgomery Wards.

Those were the good old days. I bought my first deer rifle from them whe I was 13. We'll never see anything like that again.

I'm glad that your case seems to be correct for your gun.:)

Heh...yeah, those were the good old days when hardware stores could sell guns without being labelled right-wing subversives and the like. Just for fun, I scanned the receipt. It looks like this guy got a 15% discount, for a cool $255 purchase price.

Anyway, thanks for answering my questions. I'm going to sell the gun soon, and didn't want to put out any misinformation on it.

That was a lot of money in '77.
In fact, it was more than my first car cost me!:D

What barrel length is your gun?
