Guys,
My Ga "Small Firearms Lic" is up for renewal.

Does anyone have a source for the bond that is cheaper than the $170-190 range?

Lee,
I wonder if you can set up a trust of some kind that will cover that. If I am not mistaken, you can set up a trust that will allow you to bypass the LEO approval to buy a Class 3 weapon. Obviously, it doesnt bypass the Feds.

Curtis,
Remember, we are dealing with Government.
Ga requires a license to deal in "Firearms less than 15" in Length".
It only costs $25 per year.
However, it requires a $1000 bond. NO ONE, including the state agency selling the license, NOR the bonding companies, can tell me what the bond assures!!
Get this- the bond always says that if the company ever pays it, I have to pay them back.
So, after a few years, at roughly $200 a whack, it becomes obvious that I should just send the state $1000, but THEY WON'T do that.
I can, however, use a property bond- it only requires THREE pieces of real estate to assure that lousy $1000 !! Land must be real cheap where they live.

Lee,

I'll try to find out for you. :)
Might be tomorrow though. :(

Also, do you have the similar "handgun" license which is separate from the "firearm under 15" in length" license?

They almost look identical, but they are separate licenses.

Yes, per year.
It is extremely hard to find someone who will write the bond.
In the 90's, I paid $50 per year.

I guess I'm lucky in Alabama. We only have to have a business/occupational license and mine is just $85 a year to sell handguns, long guns, and ammunition. Never heard of any kind of bond. Bummer for you Georgia boys. :(

Wow. If you could put up cash, you would be money ahead borrowing it from Guido. Even he doesn't charge that much interest.

Lee, I would speak with your state representative-Not taking a cash bond in lieu of commercial surety is nonsense-----unless someone in charge has a family member that sells bonds for a living-which in light of my Louisiana upbringing is entirely plausible.

I actually think this may be how it originated! ;)
It is almost ridiculous- as I said, NO ONE can explain to me what the bond is for.
The part where they will take THREE separate pieces of property in lieu of a $1000 bond is ludicrous- You couldn't buy 1/10 acre in Georgia for $1000.

It has got to be a hold over from the days gone by...like before WWII.

Back in the late 70's when I still had my "non-stocking" 01 FFL, I asked one of my fellow "non-stockers" if he had gotten his GA handgun seller's license yet (I had mine already).

His response: what license??.

It makes me wonder how many people didn't even know such a thing existed. With the last go-round in the General Assembly, I expect the fee for the license itself is going to go way up (along with a lot of other things.)
